Driving across Kansas - tags
I'm getting ready to take possession of a 911 in Topeka and drive it home to Colorado. The KS DMV says I should come in and buy a temporary tag once I get the title. But I'm buying on a weekend. I'm not sitting in a hotel in Topeka waiting for the DMV to open.
Are there temporary tags I can get in advance (like dealers do) or should I just go without tags? If I get pulled over, the worst that could happen is a ticket right? Thanks for any advice. Chris |

Do they have a web site? If so you should be able to get a temp tag on the weekend (if you have use of a printer).

Try what jeff said.
BTW, I wouldn't speed. One time I drove from Lawrence, KS to Denver, CO on I-70 and saw 17 cops....16 of which were in Kansas. 400 miles from Lawrence to the CO border = 1 cop every 25 miles in KS. Good luck. -Matt

Yeah they do, but I see no way to pay and print tags on it. They sent me an email saying I needed to go into the DMV personally with the title and proof of insurance.

Most states have a 7 day transport temp piece of paper that you tape in the rear window. Can be printed out on line. Different then temps tags - this is just for transportation.

It varies from state to state, but why would you bother with Kansas tags if your home is in Colorado? When I purchased a car long distance (NJ), I checked with my NC insurance agent about the procedure for bringing the car home. He instructed me to take a tag off of one of my existing cars with me, temporarily put it on the car and drive her home, so that's what I did. If I had gotten pulled over, I would have produced my registration card (which matched the tag #) that was in my name to prove the tag wasn't stolen, and the bill of sale, title, etc. signed over to me. If you're not comfortable doing that, I would contact your CO DMV to see what they advise. Hope this helps...

From the Colorado DMV website on the 7 day temp permit - 2. A temporary permit may be issued for a maximum of seven (7) days upon the sale of a motor vehicle by a new or used motor vehicle dealer, wholesaler, or wholesale motor vehicle auction to another dealer. Said permit shall only be used to facilitate the delivery or movement of the vehicle from the point of sale or storage to the new owner's place of business or storage. Said permit shall be considered expired upon receipt of the vehicle at the new owner's designated location.

I just spoke to the Colorado DMV and they won't help until the vehicle is in Colorado. The KS Highway Patrol said that the best way to go was to use my Colorado plate.
No-lift, your quote above also makes it very clear that only DEALERS can get these permits.

Chris,
Go to your Colorado county DMV with a copy of the registration, title or anything official (photocopies seem to work) and a copy of a “Bill of Sale” and you can get a 60-day temp. You also need a “Proof of Insurance” card for one of your other cars and a fax from your insurance agent that the 911 is covered (it should show the VIN). That will give you a paper temp and a proper registration card. No hassle with any trooper. When you get home you will need a “Physical Inspection” to verify the VIN and the certificate that it passed emissions (using the temp registration). Both can be done at a State Emissions Station for the late cars. To get your plates and title, you need “Proof of Insurance”, properly assigned title with any prior liens signed off, your “Bill of sale” showing the amount paid (this is what DMV uses to calculate sales tax), and your emissions certificate. If a financial institution is involved, they have staff that can do some of this for you. You will still have to have the VIN inspected and get the emissions test done. You didn’t say what year/model you are buying. Almost any 911 can be made to pass. If this is a modified “hot rod” 911, I would encourage you to take it to a shop and measure/adjust the mixture. There is a lot that can be done. Depending on the year some serious race engines can pass emissions. If yours is ’81 or earlier, you may qualify for “Antique” plates – one emissions check and forever grandfathered. Best, Grady

Grady,
They said over the phone that they wouldn't do that for a vehicle that isn't here yet. Do you think a FAX of the title is going to work? I would think they would need original title signed over to me already. Until I pick up the vehicle, I won't have the title.

I live in Kansas. Driving From Topeka to CO on I70 without temp tag is really a long shot. Kansas Troopers patrol I70 much much more than any other Kansas road.
If you took a two lane across the state the local sheriff or police would stop you for sure. If you do try to chance it, make sure you have a good bill of sale, proof of insurance from your carrier (special for the new purchase) and be very very polite and respectful if you get stopped. Kansas troopers are a class act but no nonsense. D

Grady was right. I took a FAX of the title and bill of sale along with proof of insurance into the Boulder County DMV and they gave me a 60 day registration, even though they said they wouldn't over the phone.
They went ahead and charged the taxes though, which is probably what made them so eager to do it. Anyhow, thanks for the help from everyone. Tomorrow I get to do the fascinating drive across west Kansas once more. But it'll be worth it!

Do not slap the wrong plate on the car. I am not sure about other states but in Florida it is fraud and can land you in jail.
I bought my 911 in Kansas City and the owner was nice enough to let me drive it back to Florida with his tag. I insured the car before the trip then went and got it. I overnighted the plate back the monent I got the car home. Is the seller willing to let you take the plate with the car?

You might get ticket....but they have to catch you first.
Just get the sound track to 'Cannon Ball Run', a thermos of coffee and go for it. We'll pitch in for your bail. |

I bought my 911 from a guy in New Hampshire and was planning on putting my plates from Colorado on it to drive it home. I think it would have not been a problem. It turns out the PO gave me his plates for the drive and I promptly returned them after I got home. The ignition went out on the drive home and we had to push start it everywhere. When we pulled in for gas and left the car running and filled it up we got a lot of strange looks. Watch out for the "man" when you are entering Colorado. They were hidding everywhere!!
Good Luck!

I made it. I ended up getting a registration from Colorado, but the tinting was so dark, that he just let me borrow his plate. No problems with the MAN. KS was crawling with them from Topeka to Hayes, but only one after that. None in Colo. Thanks for all of the feedback.
