Whether or no the collapse of Enron has hurt anyone has nothing to do with Ken Lay's guilt or innocence. My guess is he would be guilty as sin under the new law (Sarbanes-Oxley), but that's irrelevant here. I think he was probably asleep at the switch and is certainly criminally negligent. But I don't think he's nearly the monster he's been out to be by the media and politicians.

Has the Enron debacle really hurt anyone? Only if you count the thousands who lost pensions/retirement/employment. Maybe the case has not recieved the press elsewhere that is has gotten here in Houston, but Skilling and Kenny Boy are rats. For him to say that he didn't know what was going on in the company is unbelievable. They both were portrayed in the media prior to the collapse as having godlike intelligence and business savvy. Skilling and Lay would likely back that assertion. Now for them to use the defense that they were ignorant of the double dealings is not credible, in fact it is incredible. A jury of his peers would include rats, roaches and liars. I hope they find him guilty and punish him severly. I did not lose any money in the collapse.

A question I heard on CNBC the other day that is also an interesting debate is:
Assuming Lay is guilty and goes to Jail, does Bush pardon him upon his exit of office? (he was one of the biggest contributors to his campaign, right? ?). Don't want to divert your thread, I personally feel he is guilty but don't really follow the details close enough to say that with any conviction.

Pretty sure Bush would not pardon Lay, if Lay were found guilty. Remember, Lay asked the admin. for a federal bailout before the collapse and Bush refused.

I am appalled at the number of good, hard working folks who have lost almost everything as the result of poorly managed companies uncovered over the last few years. (Although this BS is nothing new) The $$$ amounts get larger all the time and not only do the employees pay through lost salary and lost retirement benefits but the taxpayers are footing the bill in the long run. You'll appreciate the perspective more when you are looking at 2 - 3 years until retirement and wondering who the hell is going to pay the bills for the next 30+ years. Key Lay (and all the other SOB's involved) need to have every penny of his assets attached and distributed back to the people he stole it from. There, now you know how I really feel. |

All the Enron guys I ever dealt with all seemed like really nice guys. Of course, they were Engineers, etc. They also hated and despised one of our vice presidents and black balled her.
Ken Lay wrote our then President Bob Nardelli (Now CEO of Home Depot) that if this particular VP ever attended a meeting, all Enron employees were instructed to pack up and leave. If she attended a phone conference, they were instructed to politely hang up. She lasted about another year at GE before heading to Pratt, and they fired her after about 3 years. I can't hate Ken for that!
