How do we verify natural gas usage, are we being cheated?

I guess it works for me because my electric and gas are from the same provider. My bill actually fluctuates rarely and the plan benefits me little. Why am I on it? I signed up 20 or so years ago when a $100.00 spike would have been an issue and there is no charge to be on it. Thanks Legion you did get the wheels turning with that comment and I called.
