1 guy at 37 but he's classified with some personality / mental disorder.

He was thought of as one of the "most likely to succeed" in HS, he's a friend of mine. Sad.

I know of a 37 year old guy that still lives at home. He seems normal enough but I guess he just likes it there and his family doesn't seem to care.

What you're really asking is 'oldest person still living w/ parent(s), I think.

My first thought when I saw your questions was, hmmm, my mother is 86 and still lives at home by herself...

the friend of mine that passed causing me to miss that AX this past summer was 39 and at home. he was a mess, he had tired of living, arguing with his folks over cleaning him room, doing drugs (not a harmless doobie neither), eating pizza & other bad food everyday, extremely overweight, sleeping disorder that caused him to fall asleep at any moment, working with his contractor brothers part time at best, as i said a mess.

i think what he had become was because he lived at home and that compounded his unhappiness leading to his "checking out". a real shame, as he did much better in school than some of the guys we all ran with, including me, and we all amounted to more than him. he was really depressed and ready to go at the end, other people and i had discussed it a few weeks prior to him passing.

hey look what doobie comes back as with spell check! not my spelling, but the idea is there....

I think that a lot of the blame for something like that is the parents. Some 'Tough Love' might have saved him, especially since he had exhibited the potential in school.

There's a pair of brothers living with their parents across the street from me: one is 50, the other mid-40's.

Now I don't feel so bad after reading this. I am 25 and at home but looking to get out sometime this year if a few things start to change.

84porsche, I think you should keep feeling bad, and feel worse and worse until you get out on your own. Sell the cars (both, if you have to) and get a $5k car for transportation until you get on your feet.

It will force you to 'make' things change this year instead of just hoping that they will.

I thought about my cousin a couple months ago when you mentioned this before. Now you brought it up again, so you're at least thinking about it.

Not kidding in the slightest, the years can just slide by and you could be 35 with cool cars living with your parents like my cousin. It doesn't take that long to get comfortable and lose the critical ambition. It's self perpetuating. Girls won't go out with you if you're still at home at that age. No family, no kids. Eventually no real self worth.

Seriously.

End of preaching. My cousin is soooo sad. Anyway, 84, think about it hard.

tcar,

I appreciate your preaching, I will think about it and hopefully be out real soon. I have the ambition but I need to make it work for me again. Every couple of months, I keep questioning so the move is now and I have waited long enough. Time to shuffle a few things. Reality check aisle 84porsche. Thanks.

When I bought my house from my mother-in-law, she had a non-paying tenant, a grandson who was 25 at the time. Dude was living large; nice clothes, dining out, newer car, etc. I let him stay with us for 2 months, just to give him time to find another place. Two months came and went, so I decided to start charging rent (the going rate in this town for a studio is $750). He couldn't get out of here fast enough! He found someone else to live off.

If my kids are at home at 21, and able, they WILL be finding another place. You never really learn about life until you live on your own.

My own brother. He's 33 now, been out-of-work for about the last five years or so. It's part that the economy still sucks for his field (biotech) and partly because he's stubborn and doesn't want to relocate from Boston. Oh well. He's at least been taking some classes and such. . .

Edit: Way to personal, sorry for anyone who had to read that. Let me just put it this way: I moved out when I was still in high school & have zero respect for people living at home past their early 20's.

When in my early twentys my mom (God rest her soul) confronted me and said "A man doesn't live with his mother a boy does"...words that I'll never forget. It was tough as I saw many of my spoiled friends living in luxury with their parents who catered to their every whim. Shortly thereafter I moved into an apartment. I then realized it was the best thing my mother had done for me. I never looked back.

I wouldn't mind my son living with us for a couple of years after graduating from college as long as he works and pays rent. I'm just not ready to be an empty nester.
