"The tiny fraction of memos that have been released reveal a cynical, no-holds-barred manipulation of the process by leftist groups, which have amassed gigantic war chests for their efforts. The most egregious memo exposed thus far, written by a staffer to Senator Ted Kennedy, bluntly discusses an effort to affect the outcome of a then-pending case by delaying confirmation of an appeals court judge. The memo specifically recognizes the impropriety of delay for that purpose. Another memo attacks Miguel Estrada, who subsequently withdrew his nomination. His offenses: his career has left no paper trail to be picked apart; he’s Latino, and was thought being groomed for the Supreme Court." Memo-gate Seems that every time the Democrats are crying "wolf!!", they are standing squarely in the chicken coop with their mouths full of chicken and egg all over their face. The hearings have become sickeningly absorbing. There is something really gruesome about watching a man suffer attack to his character and not be able to respond – knowing that if he responds with anything close to proper outrage he will be labeled, in addition to what else he’s being labeled, “temperamentally unsuited for the court.” I note Alito's grace under pressure. But his remarkable composure has not been without subtle glimpses of emotion. I believe one can see faint flickers of pain, or the painful awareness of a bright, gentle and intellectual man unaccustomed to personal calumny that he simply must grit his teeth and take it. He is smart enough to know that his best revenge is to survive. Proof of this pain, I think, was made clear today by his wife’s loss of composure. I'm sure she felt this same emotion the previous two days, and probably shared it with him in private. The low point of this awful farce was reached today with Ted Kennedy's performance. Looking down his bifocals like some of sort of old, degenerate yet weirdly robust headmaster – an ageless man-child of misguided power who’d lost his moral authority long ago but, with the help of influential men, "reclaimed" it (and there is no fiercer moralism like the reclaimed kind, the kind that has defeated conscience!), his holy baritone booming, he showed us how utterly the Left has come to embrace and exemplify the new McCarthyism. The stench of it seeps through a television. He read inflammatory articles from the journal of a college undergraduate club which Alito once belonged to (articles Alito of course did not write), he badgered him with references to conduct Alito never displayed, repeated "code word" denigrations Alito never spoke, and the whole time waved the infamous “unspecified papers” of indictment over Alito's head. Essential McCarthyism. Lacking truth and content, rooted in the determined will to slander, McCarthyism is a violation of human decency, a destroyer of all hope for civil discourse. It is, truly, the last refuge of the intellectually dissolute. Kennedy didn't disappoint. There is one good note in all this. McCarthyism is the sign of a personality or movement in a state of advanced denial and decay. It is a sign of the loss of moral sobriety and of a growing, feverish contempt for rules that one knows he can no longer play by and win.

On another note, what the hell is wrong with Cool_Chick these days? This is the second very questionable post in two days that I have seen from her. Is someone hacking her account or is this a side of her personality we haven't seen yet??

Alito is a first rate intellect and from what I can see is very measured in his responses. Delibrate and that is a quality one would want on the Court. Many times conservative stanced Justices wind up being more Liberal once they get on the Court...Earl Warren was a Repblican if one recalls. Teddy is just a disgrace.

From what I have heard about Alito thus far, I think he as as qualified as anyone for the job. How many people could even sit thru a grilling like he just received without cryin' like a baby or going catatonic?
Feinstein, on the other hand, needs to GO. Every election I wonder who the H! keeps voting for her! The -only- good thing I've ever heard about her 'accomplishments', from one of my employees, is that she apparently has supported programs for autistic and developmentally challenged kids. That sounds good to me. Nonetheless I recall hearing her speak at a commencement ceremony years ago and I was gagging and squirming in my seat the entire time. She used a medical school graduation event to get on her soapbox and spew the ultralib bay area nonsense that I guess her constituency wants to hear...but the rest of us DON'T!

The description of Kennedy really captures his essence. I think the appropriate term is demagogue. As far as Fienstiens' popularity, I think it's the same constituency that CC refers to that keeps her in power. Not that there is anything wrong with that! |

That would be the super-elaborate underground "conspiracy" theory. Another "possibility" that could be just a tad more grounded is that they're two different people with two different accounts who happen to know each other and just may have logged in to the other's PC using said own account in the past. Roberts is a first rate intellect. Alito can probably make a good meatball now and again. Honestly, the only thing we know about him is he's a little fuzzy on what he's done in the last 30 years. he can't seem to remember a whole lot. First rate indeed. ![]() It's all about standards. and bush has lowered everyone's.
