It has never managed to reach even half the sales numbers it was supposed to.

And it continues to die, as I've said in other posts.

It had "novelty" factor when it came out, and that was when it was going to be the hottest. And even then, it piled up on the dealer's lots.

Now that the novelty is gone, there is NO HOPE for increased Cayenne sales. No hope at all. What can they possibly do to increase sales of that anomoly? Lower the price? Already did that with the VW Golf engined version. Raise price? That doesn't move cars. Put a bunch of incentives on it like American car manufacturers to try to move them at lower profit margins. Well, that's one strategy Porsche has historically tried to avoid, but can't avoid it with the Cayenne and has been doing it, which is unprecedented for a relatively new Porsche model.

It's a vehicle that simply makes no sense at all. And the market will prove it by rejecting it.

Just an example, from the current Panorama:

"Porsche vehicle sales surge despite lagging Cayenne sales picture." Cayenne sales are down through September 2005 23% from the same period last year.

As I've been saying from Day 1, history will show that the Cayenne was a HUGE financial mistake for Porsche. They were at least 10 years too late to cash in on that party.

Why'd they redesign it then?

When you've got an investment this big in a project, and you are this early in the product cycle, you gotta just keep on truckin' and hope for a miracle.

Plus, mid-cycle freshenings are common and are planned from the very beginning of production.

Then again if Porsche was scooped up tomorrow it wouldn’t bother me a bit. They haven’t made anything in almost 10 years that even remotely peaks my interest.

BTW Shouldn’t this be on the Cayenne board?

I just don't get it either....

Ditto for Porsche losing its independence (not that there is any automaker now with the firepower or the balance sheet to justify such a big price tag for PAG).

What I find is strange is how people compare a Suburban to a Cayenne. To me they are in completely different segments...
If I had to tow stuff, drive 7 passengers around and wanted to feel like a bus driver I would get a Sub...

To me you compare the X5, the FX45, the Cayenne, the Range Rover with the likes of the E 320/500 wagon, A6 wagon etc...
And you'll be surprised that the Cayenne is a more fun proposition than any of the above mentioned cars...

Will I take a huge hit on resale? Yes... but it is the same with a Suburban, E500 etc...
For us it mattered that we could put the double stroller in the back, had room for 3 car seats and was fun enough to drive for me at the weekend that we could leave my 911 in the garage...

The Cayenne accomplished the mission.

I agree.

If Porsche made something like the Vehicross would it of sold in the numbers it has? Vehicross owners (5,000 of them world wide) I've read about claim to be selling because it's just too small - can't put a child seat in a two door very easily.

Sportier than a chille pepper in my opinion.
