Chevron Corp.'s fourth-quarter profit climbed 20 percent to $4.14 billion, a company record that continued the most prosperous stretch in its 126-year history as the oil company capitalizes on high fuel prices that are squeezing consumers and ruffling politicians.........................Revenue totaled $53.8 billion, a 26 percent increase from $42.7 billion in the comparable 2004 period..............................For all of 2005, Chevron's $14.1 billion profit amounted to $6.54 per share, topping its previous highest annual profit of $13.3 billion, or $6.14 per share, established in 2004. Last year's gains partially reflect Chevron's increased size after completing a $17.8 billion takeover of Unocal Corp. in August.
The fox is in the hen house, what did you expect?

Really, what did you expect?

Like a slow motion accident - saw this coming a mile away, but could not accept it then, nor now.

It pays a decent div and if it continues to appreciate it's probably a good buy. You may as well benefit from the greed.

I love these bash the energy company threads...rather than see the other side of the coin and take an active share of the company's common stock and understand their financial statements, we'll just complain about how we're all being screwed over...

So for the lefties, would you have rather seen the Chineese aquire Unocal? Damned if you do, damned if you don't.

No, I would not have liked the Chinese to acquire Unocal. However, in typical Republican arguing style, you have set up a phony/straw "A or B" style dilemma, then accused anyone who attacks oil company gouging of picking door # 2, ie. the Chinese buy Unocal. Or Saddam flies his own planes into your house. Or some other equally asinine premise.

How about door # 3, the U.S. leads the world in alternative energy research/production and conservation combined w/ green environmental solutions? Clinton and Gore both correctly stated that a huge investment in this technology would be a massive boon to the U.S. economy that is sustainable and could replace other economies that are going bye-bye, plus there is only one opportunity to be out in front, selling the technology to the rest of the world, and it is NOW.

Bush/Cheney's energy policy? Hard to really know, since we don't even know who is/was on Cheney's "energy committee" much less what was discussed or decided, but whatever the fuch it was it seems to have only made oil companies filthy stinking richer by destabilising the major oil producing region of the world and therefore manipulating energy prices through the goddamn roof. Brilliant, these MFers.

I agree that the smart money would have bought big oil stocks the minute these assclowns got elected, back when oil was artificially cheap thanks to the previous admin's policies. (Which are a whole 'nother rant, I have my problems w/ them as well).

Gov. Granholm's State of the State speech - Michigan, was pretty good. She spoke of going the alternative energy route and taking our domestic automotive industry with us.

Dick Devos

http://www.mi-democrats.com/PR1-17-06Toyota.htm
Quote:
While head of Amway, DeVos cut 1,400 Michigan jobs and had a record of negative job growth for this state. Coinciding with DeVos' layoffs was his investment of hundreds of millions of dollars in China which created tens of thousands of jobs there. Just prior to the Michigan job cuts, DeVos took advantage of the family political influence created by millions of dollars in soft money contributions to the GOP and sought and got federal tax breaks on Amway's China investments..

http://www.mi-democrats.com/PR1-25-06plan.htm
Quote:
LANSING- Michigan Democratic Party Chair Mark Brewer today challenged Republican gubernatorial candidate Dick DeVos to produce his specific plan on Michigan's economy or get out of the race for Governor.

"For over 7 months Dick DeVos has been going around Michigan trashing our state while at the same time Governor Granholm, and a bipartisan group of legislators, have been working to implement a plan to improve our economy," Brewer said. "Real leadership is trying to solve a problem, not talking about it. I challenge Mr. DeVos to put out an actual plan to improve Michigan's economy, otherwise, he should withdraw from the race."

DeVos has continuously pushed back the release of his plan.
A Dick without a plan.

We were kicking ass under Engler (more to it than that I know), but Granholm has accomplished NOTHING!!! ZERO, NADA. I believe we are ranked 48th out of the 50 states as far as our economy right now? Her economic record with Michigan makes Bush look like a golden god.

Truth is I know she will likely win as Michigan has become a welfare UAW state now.

Lendaddy, I've researched this topic before on this forum - always like the facts to support my opinion. Facts were/are we in Michigan have lost good paying manufacturing jobs - lots of them. Facts are Michigan leads the country in re-investment of high-tech jobs/industry - billions of new monies have been poured in for future growth.

Fact is I found this to be a split biscuit.

Jobs and economy are great when Bush supporters talk about Bush.

Jobs and economy are terrible when Bush supporters talk of Democratic governors.

I expect no less of you, it is after all politics.

The Michigan gov - Democrat is beating the drum about helping domestic auto makers (and other industries) to lead the world in alternative energy development. Hence getting us off this oil merry go round.

Discuss.

Michigan is WAAAAAAAYYYYYY behind the rest of the US. It is truly a unique example. We are not losing jobs so much as we are losing companies. No one wants to do business here, plain and simple. When things were rolling and doing business in Michigan meant easy sales to the auto industry the state raised business taxes ...........bescause they could, because businesses saw it as the "price of admission". Now things are different, but the price of admission remains, problem is the show packed up and left a few years back.

Granholm has done little to nothing to lure businesses back. But the unemployed union guys love her!

if you think that is going to happen in our lifetime, I'd have to disagree. The auto industry doesn't support it. How are they going to develop the technology and deal w/ the R&D cost when they can't make any money under today's market conditions. The consumer doesn't support it as well. When we get committed to alternative energy you will quickly see the opportunity to own a Porsche go down the drain, forever!

You mean the domestic auto industry lacks the leadership and will? Of course they have resisted change, many of the hi-tech firms are small and or associated with the leading universities - they wil lead the change. As for getting the big 2.5 to follow, it's up to Bill Ford and others who have swore to change.

I dare you to click the link below and down load the pdf or the video of Michigan's governor in action (upper right corner).

http://www.granholmforgov.com/site/PageServer?pagename=SOS2006&JServSessionIdr006=phggjcrmm1.app1b
Quote:
Granholm highlighted a number of successes produced through her focus on growing the economy and her Jobs Today, Jobs Tomorrow plan which was first announced in last year’s State of the State address. She pointed to the 327,000 jobs that have been created or retained by administration efforts, the $2 billion that will be invested in diversifying our economy, the 19,000 out-of-work citizens who have been matched with jobs through the MI Opportunity Partnership, and the nearly $3 billion in infrastructure projects that are being accelerated over the next three years as evidence that the plan is working. Granholm noted that 99,000 more people are working today than when she took office, but noted that because people are still being impacted by the economic transition, there is still much work to do.
