FWIW this happened to my Dad in WWII. He enlisted for a year prior to the attack on Pearl Harbor. After the bombing his enlistment was extended "for the duration". He ended up serving for the entire length of the war when he originally enlisted for one year.

I've never met your father, but I'd be willing to bet the words "quit" or "sit-down strike" never entered his mind when his tour of duty was extended. His service was, and still is, appreciated!

And you're right. He always considered it an honor. When it came to be our turn to serve there was no question about it. He wasn't happy by any means but we all knew the score.

Those oaths are a two way street. The federal government has an equal or greater obligation to obey the law.

I'm not speaking about how it is, I'm speaking about it is legally and morally supposed to be.

We didn't become America by accepting the way it is, we changed the it is permanently. I'm not about to let the US government become the British government, or more accurtely remain like the British government, without a serious fight.

But, more to the point, who cares? The government is abrogating the contract they struck with these men and women, making them null and void.

They should resign, and walk away.

Now, if only one or two do it, they'll be arrested and a few are being arrested, but if thousands do it, the practice of involuntary servitude stops.

From what I have read of your work, I know you are serious.

There are many people, including myself, who take it a bit more seriously when they swear an oath, Hippocratic, military or other.

It astounds me that someone could profess be profoundly Libertarian, and serve in the US Military. I guess you were just kidding when you said, "I will well and faithfully discharge, etc, etc."

I guess you must have changed your politics after retiring, or just shirked your duty the entire time you "served"

So then tell me, Pat, how do you think your soldiers would react to your statements? As Rick stated, if you were to go to Iraq, or just over to Fort Bragg, and talk to the soldiers there about "quiting" or having a "sit-down strike". Talk that they're just a bunch of fools. How do you really think they would respond?

Also, would your statements about "quitting" and a "sit-down strike" be considered sedition? Especially for an Army officer? I seem to remember a few years ago an Air Force officer forced to retire for saying disparaging remarks against then President Clinton. Granted, you're already retired, but as a retired officer aren't you still somewhat subject to the UCMJ?

I work with a retired Army Reserve Colonel, I think I'll ask him.

Pat's views are a sorry excuse for an american. Maybe he partook of to much agent orange or that stuff the military isn't supposed to smoke. His mind is shot in any case. His views by the way, are NOT Libertarian, they are just plain nuts. I am for the most part Libertarian. I may be a bit of a troll to boot, but I am an american first, and everything else second. I cannot see how Pat can justify any of his stands, they are not of the Libertarian party. He only picks and chooses the crazy ones he likes and out of context in many cases to make his points. Someday he may actually have a point of his own to make.
