Los Angeles, CA???

Hi Folks -

I might have a 6 month gig working on Wilshire Blvd, near UCLA.

Anyone know the area? Is it nice? Anything to do?

Thanks.

The area is nice and very expensive. Mostly single family homes. Few apartments.

The entire Westwood Village area caters to students. It has something like five movie theaters, plenty of restaurants and shops. UCLA has good theater, music, etc.

You could spend six months in this part of L.A. and never get bored with the choices in entertainment, food, etc.

Fun area for short-term. Upsides is it's a very fun, young, hip trendy area with a lot of cool stuff to do. Downsides are traffic/parking is impossible to deal with (if you can't find a place to live without a garage, don't bother - seriously), it's insanely overpriced (and that's by overpriced CA RE standards) and it's filled with the most pretentious self-absorbed, stuck-up snobs on the planet. Good-looking gals are abundant but if you don't have a bank account with $10million or more in it, you don't have a chance of doing anything other than going home and whacking off at night, so don't try.

Yes, I used to live on the west side myself, yes it was a lot of fun while it lasted and no, I don't regret leaving there - I doubt I'd ever live there again. Been there, done that. But if you have the opportunity to do it (especially on someone else's dime) go for it. It'll be a fun few months.

Not sure where you're thinking. Wilshire is all highrise apartments near UCLA, and low rise apartments abound around UCLA. The single family stuff is north of campus, and there is some south too...but the major streets there are all apartment lined. I live near Veteran and Santa Monica Bl, and its a short walk to Wilshire.

You need to wander off the main streets. the area is all small homes. There's a stretch of "concrete canyon" starting a couple blocks east of Westwood on Wilshire, but those aren't apartments, They're multimillion dollar condos.

There is car related stuff all over LA, head ondown to Santa Monica (just go west on Wilshire) many places of all types, there are nice beaches there. Just ask around when you are there and you will be directed to whatever you want, traffic is a major pita, one of the reasons I only visit these days.

Its nice and lots of traffic. Check out the Peterson Auto Museum, the Getty, La Brea Tar Pits, go to Venice to see the weirdos, Go to Disneyland, Universal City Walk, The Grove, the Beaches, drive Mulholland (the Drive, not the PP poster).

Thanks everyone.

This is just a short term (3-6 month max) contract gig.

Someone else is paying for travel, lodging, food and expenses.

My hotel will probably be a few blocks from my office, which is right next to campus, so I planned on walking around a lot.

I know that isn't the LA way, but I despise traffic, and like to hike (urban or otherwise).

Apologies for the glib answers, but there is so much here, it's pretty hard to advise without knowing more of your interests. Westwood is one of the best walking and people watching places here. Wear sunglasses so your eyes don't pop out looking at the firm young bods.

30 miles northwest up Pacific Coast Highway (say 'PCH' or they'll know you're an alien) gets you out of the city into some beautiful and uncrowded beaches, roads, and hiking trails.

Traffic on PCH is brutal during rush hours and weekend afternoons, but if you time it right, a very pleasant drive. Public transportation pretty much sucks, so you will need a car to get much of anywhere. Let us know when you're coming. This group will use any excuse to do a canyon drive/lunch/bs session.

You will have the time of your life.
Get in touch with some of us SoCal members if you need some help getting in and out of trouble
When you get settled you will find yourself writing asking which one of a million different thinks to do?

Its just like NYC. Good as long as someone else is paying, driving and taking care of the entertainment.

There is plenty to do, no doubt, but IMO Westwood has changed a LOT and personally I don't think it's all for the better. I remember hanging out there regularly in my high school years...cough...ahem...mid-eighties... But after college I lived right down the road in Brentwood for many years and honestly didn't go into Westwood but a handful of times.

Don't get me wrong, if you're single and/or 20-something and like doing the restaurant & movie thing, then it's one of the better places in L.A. to be. But in a 3 month stay I figure you'll get stir crazy and want to explore other parts of town. That means you will want to arrange for a car, at least for weekends or whatever.
