Auf Wiedersehen, RSR!

Well, the car I thought I was destined to keep has been sold. Finally!

It only took eight months to sell!

I've already bought a replacement car:

A Mazda MX-5 (Miata).

Here are some photos that were taken by the previous owner:

The engine may be in the wrong place, but she's light (960kg) and well balanced, which means she'll acquit herself well on the track.

You see, I couldn't replace the RSR with just any ol' 911. Because I can’t afford to build a 911R replica or buy a RoW ’74 Carrera 2.7, the Mazda MX-5 was the only car I could think of that would be as lithe and as focused as my old '74 Carrera 2.7 (RoW) -- for under $30k.

I'm going to modify the MX-5 over time. Maybe in a couple of years I'll take the plunge and go down the forced induction route ....

In the meantime, I'll endeavour to get to grips with this car, campaign it in a few club events, and do what a lot of people do who can't justify the expense of a seldom-driven, track-oriented 911 and buy an MX-5, a Lotus Elise or a Corvette:

Remind the 911 fraternity that the world's best handling cars have their engines in the front.

Excuse me? Just because you are upside down in OZ I will let you off on that but please then explain to all of us why almost all of the real racing cars have their engines in the rear?

Hope you can get a real rear engined sports car in the future!

Matt,

The steering wheel is also on the wrong side.

Looks nice other than that.

The Mazda people won't have the sense of humor that the p-car people will.

Well, while I question the sanity of someone who would sell a GORGEOUS 911RSR for a Miata.... my next-door neighbor builds 10-sec Miata street cars. You wouldn't believe how inexpensive it is to build up a serious lightweight/high-hp performer out of an MX5.

Still... why get rid of the Porker?

That was one of the nicest 911's we had on this board - that is saying a whole lot about that car.

Sorry dude, I just don't get it.

One of the wildest cars I have ever driven was a spuercharged Miata putting 275 to the rear wheels. The owner claimed he put in the bigger pulley and the smaller one netted him 320 to the wheels.

Good choice for a replacement if there is one. Just dont let all the chick car jokes get to you.

I like to keep a low profile, so my Porsches usually come out for track days.

My daily driver is a Miata. An absolute hoot to drive, and no prestige whatsoever. Perfect. doesn't have Porsche build quality of course, but just as dependable as any Honduh or Toyota.

But I'm keeping the 911!

There is quite a back-story to all of this, the real bummer was selling the perfect '74 Carrera w/ the rebuilt 2.7 to buy that RSR thing that turned out to be good for not much. This whole episode was a pretty major cautionary tale if you ask me. Hope you enjoy the Miata, Matt. They're fun cars that give a lot more than they ask in return, which is more than I can say for any Porsches I've owned. (The Porsches gave pleasure, but at great cost in time/work/$$/time working to make the $$/etc..).

Another of those rare times Denis & I are in agreement. I believe Matt made a good move...for Matt. Wish you the best, Matt...may you enjoy many happy and trouble free Miata miles...
