GM electrical question re: turn signals

There's a grandmotherly type where I work who has a '96 Chevy Lumina. The turn signals quit and the emergency flashers quit. Fuses are both good. Since these use seperate flashers and seperate fuses, where is the fault?

I seem to remember there being a problem with the emergency flasher switch on these cars. I cannot remember exactly what the issue was though. Except that if it went bad the turn signals would quit. (does this car have the big triangle switch on the right hand side of the instrument cluster?)

If that is not the problem, it's the combo switch in the steering collum. I have replaced several of each.

Another thought: check the bulbs

Could even be the bulb in the instrument panel, had that happen on a BMW once.

The emergency flasher switch is just behind the steering wheel... round button that pushes straight down. What's involved in switching out the stalk? Does the steering wheel have to come off? I'm just thinking I've never taken off a steering wheel that had an airbag.

Ya know, if the combo switch were bad, the emergency flashers would(should) still work.....

I dont know, I would have to see a wiring diagram.

Hmmmm
Check the bulbs
Get a test lamp, check for voltage at the flashers.

But please let me know what it turns out to be.

I think on those cars they share a common ground, might want to check.

I'm limited in what I can do on this car since it only shows up at the office. I've got a feeling she's going to have to take it to an auto-electrical shop to get it fixed.

I found little when I searched the web... one person posted they had this problem and they got a response to replace the emergency flasher. Seemed strange to me.
