I promise not to participate in idiotic political threads anymore

This is in response to Vinman's thread, ' Might as well create a Bush hating forum' (http://forums.pelicanparts.com/showthread.php?threadid=267242)

We all look stupid when we talk about politics in here, there are no exceptions. Political threads always follow the exact same pattern time after time, and it ends up with a bunch of angry bastards calling each other names. We aren't mean people in real life, so let's grow up a little in here.

Political threads and attacks are killing OT. We have way too many smart people here to let this happen.

Who will say right now that they are finished with politics in here. I know there are several people who peruse the boards who don't get into politics already. I'm looking for guys like lenndaddy, fastpat, jeff, superman, joe, shaun, etc.

I'll say it, I'm done. Whether you guys join me or not, I'm finished with it. I'm only going to post to threads that are non-political.

daleflesburg 02-19-2006 07:47 AM

Me too.......

I have a life outside of this stuff.

singpilot 02-19-2006 07:48 AM

Bryan.

You can say that cuz I suspect it was you that won the Powerball last night.

I took that vow several years ago, but sometimes I get up and go for the PPOT before the coffee kicks in.

Like this morning. I need to go erase some posts before someone quotes them and I look as stupid as the guys already in those threads.

BTW, what are you going to buy first?

Icemaster 02-19-2006 07:51 AM

Too late Sing, I already quoted you back. :D :D :D

I'm on the wagon from now on as well.

singpilot 02-19-2006 07:52 AM

Thanks Ice! Oh well, even after the cofee kicks in, I'd still leave that one.

I don't play the lotto... but someone in Lincoln did win it, from what I hear.

seriously, I'm finished. I like being in OT, but the politics suck. We'll see if anyone has the self-control to join my little crusade :p

VINMAN 02-19-2006 08:09 AM

I'm with ya Bryan. I'm sick of it.
There is so much stuff we can B.S. about on here. I've learned alot of usefull things from the guys on here. Ive met a bunch of you guys in person, and everyone seems real cool. I'm sure even the extremists from both side are good people too. But thing got too personal over stupid *****.
I enjoy this board too much, Hell its a beautiful day outside , and I'm sittin in the garage typin on my damn computer:rolleyes:

Once again I'm with Bryan and Sing on this one. I take the No politics vow!:)

cowtown 02-19-2006 08:10 AM

Just wait till the shakes set in, Bryan.

RANDY P 02-19-2006 08:12 AM

What else ya gonna talk about? Gardening?

Rodeo 02-19-2006 08:17 AM

I like talking about politics :)

Sometimes it get out of control, but most of the time it's fine

singpilot 02-19-2006 08:28 AM

NASCAR!!!!!

No politics there, right?

real550A 02-19-2006 08:33 AM

I often wonder about "rock stars", and "hollywood stars", etc. asserting their political opinions in the world forum.
If I'm in the business of trying to sell CD's, concerts, movies and endorsements, do I really want to alienate 50% of the people who are my customers?
Seems to me they are sacrificing an awful lot of loot for an opinion best kept to themselves. JMHO

edit: Oh ya, I forgot, they are sooo important!

Dave Mustaine talking to Pit Magazine just before the last election - an excerpt:

Dave Mustaine: "Yeah you've got Tom Morello from AUDIOSLAVE walking around talking about freeing the people in South America while he is walking around in his ****ing Gucci silk suits. Spare me, what do you know about that? Talk about hypocrisy. Natalie Maines from the DIXIE CHICKS said that she is ashamed to be from the state of Texas; well I'm ashamed that you are ****ing from America. I saw her at a Nashville Predators game, talk about somebody who needs to go on a diet. I don't know if she was pregnant at the time, but she sure looked it. But the fact is unless you are a politician, shut up. What do they know about politics? (With a southern accent) Oh well I'm gonna vote for a guy that gonna raise taxes on the ****ing rich. You stupid twat. You are in the upper income bracket in America, you are gonna get taxed. And when small business owners get taxed, jobs are lost. How stupid is that? You don’t know what the **** you are talking about, shut up.

Dave is the founder and lead singer for the band Megadeth..

lendaddy 02-19-2006 09:08 AM

You've gotta appreciate the use of the word "twat" in a heated diatribe:)

Mulhollanddose 02-19-2006 09:11 AM

Bryan, that is precisely what the liberals (and the country club republicans) want, to stop discussion by muddying the waters and wearying the public into apathy. They must be destroyed.

stomachmonkey 02-19-2006 09:12 AM

I'm with Vinman and Bryan. Been ignoring the political stuff for a while now and I am much happier.

If it gets to boring we can go back to discussing my grooming habits.

Mulhollanddose 02-19-2006 09:22 AM

"A democracy cannot exist as a permanent form of government. It can only exist until the voters discover that they can vote themselves largess from the public treasury. From that time on the majority always votes for the candidates promising the most benefits from the public treasury, with the results that a democracy always collapses over loose fiscal policy, always followed by a dictatorship.

The average age of the world's great civilizations has been 200 years. These nations have progressed through this sequence:
from bondage to spiritual faith;
from spiritual faith to great courage;
from courage to liberty;
from liberty to abundance;
from abundance to selfishness;
from selfishness to complacency;
from complacency to apathy;
from apathy to dependency;

from dependency back again to bondage."

Alexander Tytler (1801)

bryanthompson 02-19-2006 09:35 AM

No, it's not apathy, it's the understanding that you are wasting your f&#$*ng time in HERE with any political discussion.

Mul, you think you're making a difference? You aren't. Not in here, anyway. I bet you haven't changed one mind, neither have any of the countless lefties.

Rodeo 02-19-2006 09:45 AM

So apply this attitude more broadly ... since almost everyone has a viewpoint, and since apparently no one ever changes his or her mind, political discourse in this country is useless.

I disagree. If you listen, you can hear all sorts of things. Doesn't mean you have to agree, but free discussion, open exchange of ideas, is the bedrock of democracy.

nostatic 02-19-2006 09:48 AM

if anything Mul strengthens the resolve of the left because he is *so* over the top (and maybe even sways some fence-sitters towards the left)

That despite the best efforts of tech, pat and rodeo to convince people to go neocon :p

Are you saying that *you* listen? Look through any recent political thread, it's the same people saying the same things, there is no exchange of ideas. It's the same fools talking at each other.

Rodeo 02-19-2006 10:10 AM

You bet I listen. Now, sometimes the same thought gets posted 100 different times, in that event you tune it out. But new issues come up, and when they do, I like to listen to different perspectives. Even if I ultimately disagree with someone, it sharpens my thinking, sometimes makes me consider an angle I would have overlooked.

Tuning out just isolates us and makes our brains even more inflexible.

The other thing to consider is that there is generally something even the most ardent political opponents can agree on. If you back up enough, as Americans we generally have some common ground on the basics of life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness :) From there, it's all a matter of interpertation :)

Icemaster 02-19-2006 10:15 AM

WTF is up with the US men's hockey team? 2 5 on 3 PPs and they cant find the net?

Russia's gonna be fun.

Icemaster 02-19-2006 10:15 AM

Has anyone seen my 27 mm socket?

Icemaster 02-19-2006 10:16 AM

I'm having dungeness crab for dinner.

Icemaster 02-19-2006 10:16 AM

I wonder what the dark side of the moon looks like?

Icemaster 02-19-2006 10:17 AM

Wow! I never knew you could trap that much lint in a bellybutton...

Icemaster 02-19-2006 10:18 AM

Are we there yet? I have to pee.

Icemaster 02-19-2006 10:18 AM

Nice shoes.

Icemaster 02-19-2006 10:19 AM

NOW can we talk about something else in here?

:p

Rodeo 02-19-2006 10:20 AM

I have to pee too

See? I agree with that dickhead Icemaster about something :)

Icemaster 02-19-2006 10:23 AM

I've got toe jam to clean out.

Seriously though, on the other hand - I see it as a way of testing your theory - what happens if I say I believe this? What will prove me wrong?

At the end of the day, even though you don't concede in print - you think about what the opposition said, and you come back the next day and try it again.

It's classic debate. It seems that the real issue is the character assasination that usually happens after about 7 or 8 run in's.

It's just the internet, and most of y'all will never meet anyhow, don't be so serious.

island911 02-19-2006 10:46 AM

Oh hey, let's talk about "team" sports. . . or the weather. . . .cuz I dunwanna look foolish talk'n 'bout politics.

Did some one's pet team win lately? Did anyone have any weather?

:cool:

island911 02-19-2006 10:50 AM

Bryan, we all no you hate that you love the political threads so much.

Getting yourself banned didn't work; neither will this.

C'mon, let's hear it . . .'My name is Bryan, and I'm a Pelicaholic" :D
