Million-Dollar Ferrari Crashes in Malibu
From a Times Staff Writer

11:26 AM PST, February 21, 2006

A driver lost control of a Ferrari sports car traveling more than 100 mph along Pacific Coast Highway in Malibu this morning, slamming into a power pole that cut the car — which sells for up to $1 million — in half, according to authorities.

An unidentified passenger, who suffered only minor injuries, told Los Angeles County sheriff's deputies that the driver of the car fled the scene, according to Deputy Ishmael Lua.

The crash took place about 6:15 a.m. near Decker Canyon Road, an exclusive area of multimillion-dollar estates overlooking the Pacific in west Malibu, near Leo Carrillo State Beach.

Authorities theorized that the driver who fled lost control of the vehicle.

The car — reportedly a Ferrari Enzo worth between $600,000 and $1 million — has a top speed of more than 200 mph.

"It's hard to tell exactly. They think it was an Enzo," Lua said. "It's broken in two."

"Let me just say it was going over 100 miles per hour and maybe double that," Lua said.

Lua said the passenger suffered just "bumps and bruises."

Lua said investigators could not say where the vehicle was registered. He suggested it may have been registered in a foreign country.

Traffic on PCH was disrupted this morning during the investigation of the incident.

If I ever crash, jump on over to the passenger seat and claim the real driver ran off.

Idiots. There should be some sort of law or clause that bans insurance payouts to people who drive this crazy on the street. The cost of this and all those Carerra GT wrecks are passed on to us lesser Porsche drivers.

If you go to Don Plumley's link and click on the little picture of the crashed Ferrari (it's a video link) in the upper right corner it'll take you to a 4+ minute on-the-scene news report done this morning at about 8:30 AM. You have to sit through a 15 second commercial first though but it's worth it.

"ban[] insurance payouts to people who drive this crazy"

- there usually is - read your policy

- Besides, the ins. payments would just go to buying another pack of cigarettes while he's in prison

He was beyond lucky that the impact occured where the powertrain cradle meets the body.

My thoughts exactly.

"No sir officer. I was just hitchiking to the police station to report my stolen Ferrari when this guy picked me up driving in it."

I've driven that road thousands of times as it is very near my house (I live directly over the hill about 10 miles away as the crow flies). You can do 100 mph there pretty easily... maybe 150... but I don't think 200. Of course, I wouldn't be doing 100 mph there!!!

Idiots killed a very nice car.

This is a tact that is used more often than you'd think. It's always the bruise left from the seatbelt that gives it away. That or the broken right foot.
