Umm, I have (and long before anyone else in the US outside of VOA employees as a matter of fact).:) The Mk5 GTI in the link I referenced is a car I imported here in March 2005.;)

If you believe that a Mk5 GTI out of the box is perfect, that's simply your opinion but fortunately for me there are others that differ.:)

the fact is for a fw driver , it is quite good and there are few that compete well with it. i don't think it's perfect either just reallly a nice piece . i would prefer being able to order or add options ala catre, rather than packs...no heated cloth seats sucks. oh...the us model is different than the euro...i have driven both(we make the exhausts where i work)

i saw one on the tube last night and died. i thought of this forum right away. i like the add and all it stands for.

island911 02-26-2006 10:16 AM

Hilarious.

My brother in law in an actor in LA. Here was his reply when I sent the links to him.

those are great...

I actually did a commercial a few years ago with the girl...

she actually is German...

we did wardrobe on location for the job...just in the wardrobe truck...I was in there trying on shirts behind the little curtained off area...I came out and Zonia (German girl) was standing there completely naked, next to the stylist. I said, "oh my god, I'm sorry." she didn't even blink. "it's ok. you're fine." and she stood there naked while the stylist was trying to find her another dress to throw on. And we exchanged, "hi's" and "how do you do's"...

I think she told me then she was actually a Med student in Germany before she "fell" into modeling.

I was talking to the sales guy about one. Someone already has a chip out that bumps the horsepower up to 250. You have to assume that 300hp is possible out of his puppy if you are willing to boost it like an Evo.

VW has VERY timid tuning from the factory. The 1.8T in my Beetle only puts out 150hp. New chip = 180. New K4 turbo + chip = 240hp.

The smarter examples of this generation buy an Audi in Porsche clothes.

Wait...;)

i work for the company that makes their oem exhaust...been there, drove that. been in a new r36 yet? i have, what about the awd r36 version of the Jetta? I have. you work for autotech? nice company, bought lots of parts from tyhem years ago. i used to work for Rapid Parts myself in the 90's. The new gti is probably one of their best efforts yet i think. I try not to live in the fast and furious modd set anymore, i am sure it can be made batter, but like most things east/west your isdeas of great are different than mine. Rock hard suspensions and super low cars are really cool, but they don't work so great out here...kinda like using monoballs in a car out here. Nice but not for everyday

The ads are funny.

But are they good?

I mean, what do you know about the GTI after that you didn't know before? There is no info to be had. Which could be an indicator of the poduct substance or lack thereof. Which could be sad, because VW needs this car to be a winner.

So, no, I don't think the are good commercials. Funny, certainly. But not good.

NICKG 02-26-2006 04:11 PM

i think it is the nicest vw gti they have made to date...it is quite good

NICKG 02-26-2006 04:11 PM

and i have owned every iteration thery have made save an r32(bought an evo instead)

1967 R50/2 02-26-2006 04:28 PM

Nick-

It is not enough that it be the best GTI. It is going to have to be better than the competition. It's over 3000lbs and there are many corner carvers which are well below that.

Interestingly, one of the things that people love about past VWs is that you could tune them into something special...yet this commercial is saying that is a bad thing.

Very confusing. Funny. But confusing.

djmcmath 02-26-2006 04:31 PM

... I was not expecting a trebuchet. That was real class, it was.

NICKG 02-26-2006 04:35 PM

well if you thinbk about it, the general customer base for VW has been aging over the last decade...with cars like the evo (as an RS) for almost the same $...it will be tough to deal for the kids, at 34 i am a traditional Vw buyer, i always have one no matter what, they need to get the younger people..i think they are on the right track, but they need a true entry level car in the 10k range...like the polo or lupo(roumor has them coming...i have seen one here already)

trj911 02-26-2006 05:01 PM

Those ads are great! LMAO! And I like the series of ads they are running with the little speed dude. "Sweetie, I can't hear the sound of the engine with all your YACKIN!":D :p

What a load of baloney.

Some of us quite upwardly mobile folks might make the wise choice to get an inexpensive daily driver, thus leaving obscene amounts to spend on their P-car. :D

azasadny 02-26-2006 05:13 PM

Hilarious! Thank you for the laughs on a very sad day (death in family)... I really appreciate it!

Marketing 101: Brand Awareness. Building a positive attitude about your brand and its quality, without going into the technical details. Most buyers don't care what the bore X stroke of the engine are...but the German engineer saying that it's "tuned by Germans at the factory" is worth a lot.
