Ads = funny
New VW grill = (extremely) ugly ianc |
What I want to see is a road test between the GTI and Mini Cooper S. I haven't come across one yet in the trade magazines...
I also haven't a clue which car would win such a test. |
While we're talking, I hope someone brings this little puppy back:

I think the ads are a great slap on the face of ricers (aka Pimp my ride) though. I do believe the GTI has slipped too much over the past 3 model generations. They quality isn't there. The performance isn't there. The price really isn't there. Don't get me wrong, I loved my last two "hot hatchs" My first new car was an '87 Golf GT (couldn't afford the "I"). I traded that on the '95 GTI. I loved both. I think I miss the A2 more than the A3 though. I beat the daylights out of the A2 and it kept on asking for more. I tried to take care of the A3 and it failed me. I can only imagine that the newest Hot Hatch will be more discouraging to go along with the FAR steeper price. |
I'd kill to have my old Sirocco back.

The ads will sell cars, because they are funny and good. Giving technical info on the cars will not sell cars. My father the VW dealer was always the number 1 salesman and he didn't know a dipstick from a stickshift. But he made the customers laugh. As a manager and owner, he would advise salesmen to avoid technical talk, unless the customer asks. You sell a lot more cars that way.
And they are not dissing people who like to tune their cars to go faster. They are dissing ricers, and that can't hurt. |
The second ad is fantastic - The Flame goes to The lame and dude gets an F. Best TV ad I've seen since the Mitsubishi 3000GT VR4 racing around the horse track.

I love the unpimp my ride ads...mocking dumb kids/mtv/tuner culture.
I was a die hard VW nut from 1995-2002. Unless I found a screaming deal on an unabused 2004 R32, I don't think I will be a VW owner again. I had a 91 GTI with a 2.0 block, hot cam, 4k tranny, shine racing suspension etc, a corrado VR6 (for 4+ years...can you say $$$$ to keep it going) that ended up with all of the 'best' mods you could do (hybrid cams 276/264, ported big valve head, mk4 headgasket, liestritz exhaust with center resonator removed, awe s/s kit, shine suspension, turn2 cold air, turn2 mounts, giac chip, ported throttle body etc), and just lost interest. My 11 year old 325is is far more reliable and rewarding to drive in its current and mildly tuned state, even as I approach 170k on the clock. FWD just does not interest me anymore....I'd even take the SVT Focus over the mk3 or 4 GTi. |
I love the "Dr Strangelove-like" character! That ad is hilarious!!!

My favorite line from the ads- In response to the young man's answer-"It sucks in air." Hot chick says "Ya-it is sucking a lot!" I was in tears!:D |
A couple weeks in and number 1 and 3 are still killing me...
