turning 40 this week, what to expect?

will things start to dry up and fall off?

might i expect to start waking up earlier on weekends now that i am old?

my boss says the slow stream and additional trips to the bathroom will really cut in to my productivity during the work day. any experience there?

should i get my doctor to set me up with some viagra no, or wait until i find a new girlfriend?

will i start to complain about my long walk to school when i was a kid?

i have started to take a vitamin supplement, lost 25 lbs and getting prepared for this for the last 5 months, what else should i know, expect, look forward too turning this age? i have heard 40 is the new 30, any truth to that?

show me the light, as Ive never had a birthday weigh on my mind like this one is.

all wisdom you can share would be valued.

T.

Toby I turned 50 last year so I can still remember turning 40. To me nothing special. Physically nothing had really changed. I was still in the Army so it was easy to get a baseline on my physical fitness. I would recommend you get a complete physical so you have a baseline of your health and can spot any changes in the future.

dhoward 02-28-2006 11:03 AM

40 is the new 30.
That's what they say.

I say Bull$hit.

Happy birthday!
My advice is to start drinking heavily.

Oh, and Kurt can remember his 40th birthday, but not what he had for breakfast.
Sad, really....
:D

regularly work the ol' prostate out and many aspects of your life should be fine or improve. ;)

Let me know how it goes, I've got 5 more years. But then I don't feel a day over 20

.... until I see those young punk kids running around like idiots... :D (good thing we were never like that, huh guys??)

LITTLE BASTARDS! STAY OFF MY LAWN!!!

I hear that you have to start watching for hydraulic failures. Also, watch the rear main seal for leaks.

crashmy911 02-28-2006 11:08 AM

If you don't use it you lose it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Mulhollanddose 02-28-2006 11:33 AM

How does the saying go...if you are still a socialist by the time you are 40, you have no money?

kach22i 02-28-2006 11:37 AM

When I turned 40 I got real depressed for about a week - looking back on my life goals such as wanting to start my own business and drive a Porsche.

Two months later I went out on my own, ten months after that bought my first Porsche.

Don't get angry, get even.:D

What doesn't hurt, doesn't work...and

you get stiff everywhere except where you want to be

bigchillcar 02-28-2006 12:14 PM

feel your pain...i turned 40 about a month ago. i was so down about it, anticipating it, that i turned off my cell phone and just asked my family to stay away from my house that weekend..didn't want company. in the past couple of years i've lost love and my career..i have no kids..just me alone, turning 40. on the other hand, i was out this weekend and i saw a man having a 40th b-day party. the band played a song for him and he got up and danced with his mother...really kinda made me regret not doing something similar. my mom has been like my best friend through all of the problems of the past couple of years. in hindsight i should have done something similar with her and also brought along my brother and sis in law. once the initial shock begins to wear, i guess it gets easier.

lol..tabs.

lol , 40.... that's old man...i suggest large quantities of cheap beer, red meat, and a Bon Jovie concert... don't forget the "disco sucks" T-shirt

svandamme 02-28-2006 12:35 PM

dude, i never wore those shirts , i was 5-6 years old then
't was the ones before me that wore those :D

i grew up on new wave, followed by early hiphop and later on house music...i had my mailing adress in disco's and clubs from 16 till my 26 years, i've only recently turned it down a bit to fund my porsche rebuild, and i'm sure i'll be hitting the clubs again pretty soon now...

ZOA NOM 02-28-2006 01:25 PM

Toby, you're younger than me??? Holy crap, you've got some miles on you!

highwaystar 02-28-2006 01:35 PM

Just a number, no big deal. I feel as good now as I did 20 years ago.

One word of advice, it's a good time to stop any unhealthy habits from the past, these have a way of biting you in the a$$ when your 40ish.

Mr. Happy still shows up for duty without fail. :D

ChrisBennet 02-28-2006 01:57 PM

It's just another day.
I did notice that around 40 the magazine companies started sending me the blurry font versions of my magazines. I need stronger light or glasses just to read them.

I gotta go pee at 3 am now

bigchillcar 02-28-2006 02:29 PM

well, like i said, i just turned 40 in january..my baby brother just turned 27 yesterday..and here we are last night at his b-day party at outback. you can be healthier and stronger than at 20, i know i am. i powerlifted for a number of years, but now i'm trying more of a bodybuilding number..no need to push it so much anymore, but back in november after a 5-year hiatus, i trained for 3 months and did a 405-bench press and a 500-deadlift in a local 'push-pull' meet. not bad on the eve of turning 40..i couldn't have done it at 20 (i will say that at 30 those numbers were 440/600..so time has taken some away). i now do 'periodized training', which means i bodybuild train a few months, then strength train..and keep alternating, plus eliptical interval training 5 days a week for half an hour after my hourly workouts. i'm 6'2" and 240, but am slowly dropping bodyfat, maybe a pound a week to shoot for 225 and abs i can see clearly again. i drink very little and only on weekends, don't smoke (well, cigars..but i don't inhale). i'm about to test to be a strength and conditioning coach..new career after flying. i'm not gonna mistreat my body, as my dad has done for the last fifty years with camel smokes and jack daniel's..steady..

Turned 41 last month. I think the worse part about being 40 is.......um............well............maby the................to hell with this, I'm still younger than my wife!
Just look at the 20 year olds today and see what they can't/won't do and you won't feel old at all.

This started happening to me in my mid-40s. I didn't think anything of it, other than it was just a part of aging. Had to go to the doctor for a cyst on my arm and mentioned it to him. Turns out I have diabetes. If you regularly get up in the middle of the night to pee you may want to get checked out. I let it go too long and also have some nerve damage because of it.

Craig 930 RS 02-28-2006 05:22 PM

Seriously, good point.
Grandpa on my Mom's side pretty much died from diabetes.

cantdrv55 02-28-2006 06:23 PM

Damn, at 42, I guess I'm the old man of our local group! Happy bday Toby. I hope you're maxing out your 401k and investing in your employee stock purchase plan. Oh yeah, I hope you get laid!

You don't have to sit, if you have some one to clean up after you...

Seriously, I don't feel 40. What is 0 supposed to feel like.Some days I still feel like I'm 15.

It's a day like any other. Just make sure it counts! Just like all of the rest!

campbellcj 02-28-2006 10:00 PM

I'm gonna be 40 this year as well, and honestly I don't feel a day over 39!

Birthdays have not been high on my list since 21, if even then...

30 was a fairly expensive one and I have a feeling 40 might be as well. My wife is also turning 40 this year, so I suppose we'd better hide the credit cards and checkbooks from each other now.

Carpe Diem, watch your weight, fly low and avoid the radar...

oldE 03-01-2006 03:25 AM

I noticed all through my 40s that my age started with the number "4". That hasn't been the case for a couple of years now. Glad I'm over that.

Than there's that great quote (from an unknown source),"When I was 15, 19 year-old girls looked pretty darn good! Now I'm 51 and the 19 year-old girls still look pretty darned good!"

Having said that, my son (mid 20s) claims 19 year-olds are too young for him. now. That seems to be the oddest thing about getting older. I don't feel like I'm changing that much, but all my friends are getting so old!

I turned 40 six weeks ago. Just another day.

40 is the age where you typically have reach a certain platform in life. Sitting in your favorite chair, in your appreciated home, with a nice wife, a few kids and a beloved Porsche in the garage. Sitting there, starting to contemplate what you have accomplished and what you have not. Realizing half of your life has been consumed. Asking your self if this is it.

Crisis around the corner..:D

vash 03-01-2006 09:16 AM

now hold on! at what age do us men need to have the camera stuffed up our behinds???!!! tell me it isnt 40!!

i am only worried for myself. toby would probably like it. it would at least give his shaved gerbils a short vacation. extra sunflower seeds for the rodents. they earned it.

pwd72s 03-01-2006 09:55 AM

At 40, it's already too late to "live hard, die young and leave a pretty corpse". So, might as well try to take care of yourself and live a long time.

johnjr 03-01-2006 09:59 AM

Dude, I'm hitting 45 tomorrow. No probs and everything still works like new. Don't sweat it.

And happy birthday.

austin552 03-01-2006 10:09 AM

Depends on highway miles or city miles?
