what gun to buy?

This'll get things going...

I'm gonna buy another gun. Haven't bought one in 12 years, birthday is coming up, its time for a new one. Question is - which one?

I'm tied up between a FAL (yes, one of them EBRs - evil black rifles) or a Browning Hi-Power. Don't currently have a EBR or a centerfire pistol, so either would fill an empty void.

So... which one?

I just bought a Sig P239 in 9mm and it's a nice gun to shoot at the range. I would recommend going to a local range and see if they rent guns so you can try out a few.

What do you want to use it for? Target shooting, concealed carry, home defense, hunting? There's a gun for each of these.

Purchased a Sig 226R .40 recently. GREAT gun. Very accurate, and easy to clean.

Naw....get a MAK 90. Cheap and fun to shoot. You can throw a lot of lead.....

I call mine the The Brady Special.

(mines a bit different at this point, no folding stock)

SIGs are out of my price range. Don't need concealed carry, but wouldn't mind shooting IPDA or IPSC again. FAL would be target/plinking and hunting on nasty wet days (gotta keep the ruger 44 carbine nice, so fair weather only for it). Getting both the HP and FAL isn't an option either, due to finances.

SIG sells certified pre-owned guns, which are as good as new, come with a factory warranty and cost about half the new price. You can get some really super guns for $500 +/-. And if you plan to use it at all for home defense, what's another $100 or $200? Guns and ammo are cheap. Life is expensive.

I have a Belgium Made FN High Power (The Brownings are now made in Portugal) that might interest you. PM me if you're interested. It's a tack driver!

I luckily have one of each! FAL is great! (STG-58) and a Hi-power chambered in .40 S&W. The Browning shoots extremely well, it's also my house gun. You can't go wrong.

James, the MK III hi-powers are still made in Belgium, assembled and finished in Portugal. Either one shoots very, very well in either caliber.

If cost is an issue, you can go with the CZ-75. I have shot them and they handle/shoot very well. I regret not getting one. That would be next on the acquisition list.

Yes, CZ's are a HUGE bang for the buck. Also, SIG makes a polymer line called the SIG Pro. I have about $300 into my SP2340 in .357SIG and it's one super gun.

You can't buy guns from SIG directly. But most SIG dealers have CPO guns for sale. Check out the classifieds in www.sigforum.com or www.glocktalk.com. Two of my SIG's I bought used and they are works of art. A new P229 in .357 runs close to $900. I got a used one from CDNN for $392 delivered AND it has Trijicon night sights and Hogue rubber grips.

+1000.

My current house/defense/IDPA gun is a CZ75. Definitely mucho BANG for the buck. I picked it up at a local Academy a couple years ago for $389, IIRC. Pretty accurate, and very reliable. Definitely mucho bang for the buck!

Another thing to think about is how much can you afford to lose in a gun, if it ever ends up in an evidence room? My SIG Pro, because it was so cheap, is definitely my most expendable gun. Once in a while, I carry my H&K P7 when I go out. But then I worry - what happens if, God forbid, I ever have to draw it or, worse, fire it in self-defense? There's a story on SIGforum now by a member who had to brandish, not draw, his SIG on a homeless man that came at him with a knife. Cops took his SIG and then went to his house and took all his other guns. Charges were filed and then dropped, but all his guns are in some "evidence" locker now. I probably have close to $1000 into each of my other SIG's and even more into my P7. I can lose my SIG Pro tomorrow and not be out more than a few hundred bucks. It's also just about impervious to any kind of corrosion due to salt, sweat, whatever.
