Very good, Jared. I'm impressed. To paraphrase, yes I do miss him now that he's "gone". What an incredible talent.

"Remember when you were young, you shone like the sun.
Shine on you crazy diamond.
Now there's a look in your eyes, like black holes in the sky.
Shine on you crazy diamond.
You were caught on the crossfire of childhood and stardom, blown on the
steel breeze.
Come on you target for faraway laughter, come on you stranger, you legend,
you martyr, and shine!

You reached for the secret too soon, you cried for the moon.
Shine on you crazy diamond.
Threatened by shadows at night, and exposed in the light.
Shine on you crazy diamond.
Well you wore out your welcome with random precision, rode on the
steel breeze.
Come on you raver, you seer of visions, come on you painter, you piper,
you prisoner, and shine!"

Here's one I took myself when Ed was looking better.

A friend of mine recently worked on EVH's 993 Twin turbo.

I used to live right around the corner from him and ran into him myself a few years back. He was driving a(n original) Mini with a dutch flag painted on the top. He was a little hard to understand with half his tongue removed from cancer surgery...

I also went to see John Mayall a while back. He looked like a corporate CEO trying to be cool. But he still played very well.

I guess in order to keep from disappointing us, it's the duty of our youthful heroes to die young.

Tech, does Ed still live near Mulholland and Coldwater Canyon? or did Val get that house?

AFAIK, she got the Malibu house and Eddie still lives off Coldwater.

Rick Lee 03-09-2006 06:26 AM

That's rough. I wonder what the poor folks are doing today.

Jared at Pelican Parts 03-09-2006 07:48 AM

to me, there is no Fleetwood Mac. They died when Peter Green left.

As for Syd, Madcap Laughs is one of my favs...

Yup and yup. If only the Crazy Diamond would at least start writing again. I hear he does write some poetry, and possibly novels or something.

A couple of years ago I had "Piper at the Gates of Dawn" playing when my two teenage boys came home from their buddie's place. It sounded strangely familiar to them, as both fancy themselves Floyd fans. Nothing but their newer stuff, though. They had never even heard of Syd. So I played "Madcap Laughs" and "Barret" for them. They still didn't make the connection, although they loved the music. I was having fun. I strung them along for days, playing "Wish You Were Here" at one point, then finishing up by watching "The Wall".

I did finally tie it all together for them. The tribute to Syd on "Wish You Were Here", the images of him in "The Wall", and where Floyd started. They loved it.

Okay help out the old guy (me)... is the first pic really Eddie Van Hallen???? (sp)

Come on really????

Funny I was working on a set yesterday and they walled me into a room so I crawed out a window, one of the contractors saw that a few of the cleats didn't get locked down and tried to crawl into the window then looks at me... hands me the wrench and says "I'm too old for this"... I just turned 49!

So, so you think you can tell
Heaven from Hell,
Blue skys from pain.
Can you tell a green field
From a cold steel rail?
A smile from a veil?
Do you think you can tell?

And did they get you to trade
Your heros for ghosts?
Hot ashes for trees?
Hot air for a cool breeze?
Cold comfort for change?
And did you exchange
A walk on part in the war
For a lead role in a cage?

How I wish, how I wish you were here.
We're just two lost souls
Swimming in a fish bowl,
Year after year,
Running over the same old ground.
What have we found?
The same old fears.
Wish you were here.

Green had a breakdown as well and spent much time in mental health facilities, and apparently, has only started to play guitar again in the last few years.

Makes wonder what they WERE dropping in the 60s....

Actually, all the people posting lyrics about Barrett. Theres a reason Syd's music isnt heard often. Its mostly drug fckd and unlistenable. Dont mourn Syd, if it werent for his flip out, what would Gilmour and Waters have to write FM mainstays about? If Syd had stayed in PF, I reckon we'd never have heard of them.

Jeff Higgins 03-09-2006 02:14 PM

You are certainly right about his later stuff, Stuart, but his early pre-breakdown stuff is pretty damn good. He had already completely lost it by the time Gilmour and Wright hauled him back into the studio for a couple last tries. Even the results of those two efforts, "Madcap Laughs" and "Barret", have some real gems mixed in with the acid-induced confusion. His impact on music is still felt; many, many even currently popular "stars" credit Barret for inspiration. His influence cannot be ignored.

I often wonder where PF would be today with him. I agree; probably not nearly as well-known. Lots of folks think their music started with "Dark Side of the Moon", and their popularity certainly started there. Lots of us, on the other hand, think they were done by then. Different tastes.

stuartj 03-09-2006 02:20 PM

Well, youve piqued my curiosity to go back and have listen. What do you recommend best show cases Syd?

Jeff Higgins 03-09-2006 02:35 PM

His only three works worth listening to are the first PF release, "The Piper at the Gates of Dawn" (on which he wrote every song, save for one Waters number), and the two solo releases that Gilmour and Wright helped him with, "Madcap Laughs" and "Barret". Anything newer than that is garbage. There are some live radio sessions floating around, but they are more of a showcase of how far off the deep end he had fallen than anything else. Apparently the two solo efforts were pretty trying on his old friends and they really weren't up for much more after that. He wasn't just all spaced out, he was pretty darn nasty by then. Kind of like a mean drunk or something. It's really too bad; I thoroughly enjoy his music. Maybe not for everyone, though.

Jared at Pelican Parts 03-09-2006 03:04 PM

Piper and Madcap Laughs are the best Syd stuff

If you can find it, Tonight Let's All Get Down and Make Love in London

stuartj 03-09-2006 06:56 PM

Thanks, I revisit the old Sid.
