And "Astronomy Domine", the only Barret tune on the album (it's on the live one of the two), is the best cut on it. "Ummagumma" is pretty good, and I won't argue with anyone that calls it their best. One of my favorites; I just can't pick out a "best" from them, or anybody for that matter. Depends on the mood.

When did hair bands stop being a joke and start being heroes?

I thought they were the Nascar of music, sure you listen/watch every now and again but you sure as hell don't admit it, much less idolize em:)

Eddie wasnt hair metal

Hmm, perhaps bubble-gum metal is more accurate?

I wish I still had the 1978 issue of Guitar Player mag that was the first feature on EVH. After a decade of Jimmy Page and Ruchie Blackmore, Ed caused guitar wannabes the world over the wonder all over again -HTF did he do that? A technical wunderkind, harmonics, double handed tapping, divebombing whammy bar and the "brown" sound. Butchering cheap guitars with chainsaws, running voltage boosters into his Marshalls, echoplexs housed in WW2 shells- Ed was over the top.

Ed set the guitar agenda for the eighties, the rip tear lacerate era. He was, after Jimi H, the Next Big Thing.

Never really liked the band either, myself, but Eddie Van Halen deserves his place at or near the top of the tree in any guitar hero thread.

I doubt any guitarist of almost any persusion would disagree. EVH is up there with Chet and Django and McLauglin in terms of technical innovation- IMHO.

I'm sorry, bubble-gum "rock"

Victor 03-11-2006 08:06 PM

Len, you where probably too old to get it........

Jared at Pelican Parts 03-11-2006 08:08 PM

or, I'm too punk to like VH...

Jared at Pelican Parts 03-11-2006 08:10 PM

btw, Victor, my dad used to see VH play in backyards in Pasadena back when they were Mammoth... told me some pretty cool stories...

Victor 03-12-2006 12:03 AM

Jared, fair enough - I hadn't reckoned with the fact that "punks" would be hanging around on a BMW / Porsche / SUV forum with a right wing conservative Christian slant. ;)

Having been a teenager in the 80's, I was blown away by the guitar playing likes of EVH & Randy etc. Still am - possibly sad, but that's part of being middle aged I guess.

No matter what StuartJ says here, I never was and never will be into Poison, Cindarella, Bon Jovi, Warrant etc. Although the bird in the "She's my Cherry Pie" clip was kinda hot.....

Somehow I doubt that. I'm guessing he's about my age.

I grew up having to listen to VH on the local (LA) stations. To me, EVH was doing nothing more than masturbating with his guitar. Mind you, he's an incredibly talented player. I just don't care for his style. Maybe David Lee Roth's vocals killed it for me.

Good rhythm section, though.

Sucks that EVH looks like a grandmother now.

Victor 03-12-2006 12:39 AM

Well, I sure wish I sounded as good as EVH in the 80's when I masturbate with my guitar....

EVH is one of the most under rated guitarists around. I didn't care terribly for the genre he engaged in but his skill is indisputable.

lendaddy 03-12-2006 05:35 AM

I'm 32, so he is right in my wheelhouse. I have buddies like you guys, they loved these bands, went to the concerts, bought the t-shirts and albums (some of them still do). They tried so hard to find some "deepness" to the music that I think they convinced themselves it was there. Truth is that most young guys idolized them for the cars they drove and how much pussy they got, not an appreciation of their "art".
