so by your admission, music has to be "deep" to be good?
VH is FUN music. it isnt supposed to be deep. I was right, btw... too punk to like VH |
"The Darkness" - a little homo and very annoying vocals. Some OK fretboard fingering. "The Deepness"? Never heard of them / it.

VAN HALEN ROCKS!!! HEATHENS! I was 14 when 1984 came out and I played Drop Dead Legs at least a million times. I even made a leather bracelet in shop class that said 1984. Not that there's anything wrong with that.
You tell 'em! 1970 was obviously a good year.
I gotta get a photo of my VH tattoo. EVH is a god. I never would have started playing guitar it not for him.
First person I thought of when I saw the pic...

I'm not generally a pyrotechnics fan, but EVH defined an entire genre and style. Period. Plus the guy actually had some soul, unlike almost all the other "metal" guitarists. Some of their stuff could be considered "bubblegum", but other tracks were just downright kick arse. Come on..."Eruption" alone get's him the lifetime achievement award...
I don't even think Eruption is nearly his best work. He was 23 when he did it. All the other off the wall stuff he did was just amazing - intro to Mean Streets, Women In Love, Cathedral, Little Guitars, Spanish Fly - unreal! And have a listen with some headphones on to the guitar solos in Girl Gone Bad and House of Pain. I'm in the mood to go play now.
Spanish Fly alone puts him right um there with Al DiMeola in my book, plus he did study under Allan Holdsworth for a while
To the players here - check the intro to "Summer Nights". Apparently the only way to do that is with one of those Steinbergers (rectangular bodied / headless with a trem that somehow changed the tension on all stings so pitch is maintained). Odd - have a listen though, buggered if I can do that with a Floyd.
That's right - Steinberger/transtrem on "Summer Nights"... you can fake it by doing the intro w/capo on 3rd (?) fret, then pulling it off for the song... except that he switches back and forth a few times during the song...
Yes - and the capo generally throws the tuning out - very noticable when playing anything EVH....
I learned Summer Nights the hard way before I got the Live Without a Net VHS and saw how he did it on a Trans-Trem. You can make it sound almost identical without a Trans-Trem and without a capo. It's just a bit of a stretch, but my old band played this in college and we nailed it. Works especially well if you have EMG's;).

Listen to some UK - Allan Holdsworth was a big influence to Eddie.
