Yes - 90135 not forgotten
And Rush - hey I'm Canadian, it's in our blood, not if you want old unknown (Canadian) music that is unreal - Frank Marino and Mahogony Rush, but I am dating myself |

Man, that was a lot of fun!!! 2112 Overture and Temples of Syrinx rocked, but I have to say though, Red Barchetta was my all time favorite Rush tune to play. Randy |
legion mentioned "Meddle" by PF. That might just be my all time favorite, but I also like the often overlooked "The Final Cut" by PF. I know that it is seen as a Roger Waters album, but I like it anyway.

One I wish had made it to SACD or DVD Audio...

i'll go against the grain here...I think Rush is one of the most over-rated bands out there. Neal Peart has chops up the wazoo, but I find Leifson's guitar work to be pretty boring and Geddy Lee's vocals annoying. His bass work doesn't really do it for me either. And I don't understand why a rock band would play their songs note-for-note in concert...
Then again I think that most of the "progressive" music was anything but. Mostly technical expertise masquerading as "inventiveness". I did like ELP back in the day and had an appreciation for some King Crimson work, but more for the chops and curiousity of some of the playing/arranging. PF? Beautiful. They didn't play things complicated for the sake of being complicated. |
The very first concert I went to was Rush at the Hammersmith Odeon in London during the Hemispheres tour. Had a deep affection for 2112, Moving Pictures, Signals, Permanant Waves through high school and college but find it more difficult to get enthused about them now. Their talent aside, just find them to be a bit repititious in their sound.
Other than a close friend of mine, no one speaks about Meddle. A fav of mine and glad to see it was not just us. Meddle, Animals and Final Cut (especially when "When the Tigers Broke Free" is added back in) are what PF I listen to most. I am very interested to hear Gilmour's new disk as well. |
fearlessly the idiot faced the crowd, smiling
easily the best PF album |

F*** all that we've got to get on with these... |
I didn't get into Rush for about 2 yrs. after I started getting serious with the guitar. I never though Lifeson's stuff was that challenging and at the time, all I wanted to do was be EVH and Yngwie. But when I was 15 my band decided to start playing Limelight and it really turned me onto what else is behind Rush' music. Lifeson's stuff unacompanied is good, but not great. Combined with Geddy's and Neil's work, I think it's awesome. Nostatic, listen to the guitar work in Distant Early Warning (which is all one guitar with no overdubs) and tell me he's not awesome.
Everyone has an opinion on Geddy's voice and it's usually love it or hate it. But he stooped the high-pitched yelping around 1980-81. Since then it's been a lot more low key. And I have to admire any band that's been around that long without selling out. |
I have been a Rush fan since the Fly By Night album came out. I think everything from their first album (with no Neil!) all the way to Moving Pictures is excellent. I'm not so much into the stuff after that.
Fun stuff to play on guitar, too. My favorites (to play) are A Passage to Bangkok, The Trees, Closer to the Heart and Fly By Night. The lyrics in Limelight really give you a glimpse into Neil's feelings on celebrity. His book "Ghost Rider" is an excellent book, also. Very intellectual guy. I get chills every time I watch the "R30 Overture" on their latest DVD. Unbelievable. Mike |
I have a video tape of my old band playing all of La Villa Strangiato in a bar about 5 yrs. ago. I wonder if I can get it converted and hosted.

MEDDLE is great. I love those "before we were huge" Pink Floyd albums (OBSCURED BY CLOUDS, ATOM HEART MOTHER).

I never said Leifson's stuff was easy...just that I don't find it interesting. And I don't care for his tone. Just a personal thing.
I know that ELP is mostly overblown classical-technical babble. But there is some amazing stuff in there. Karn Evil 9 always struck me as a crazy classical piece that went somewhere without being complicated for the sake of being complicated ("hey, let's play in 7 for a couple of measures..."). But bombastic, sure... I used a snippet from "one of these days..." bit on a radio spot about 25 years ago. PF is also great production music. Either I'm from a different era, or just have different tastes. I never had any interest in learning any Yngwie. Or any of that genre. EC, Jimi, Jeff Beck, Duane Allman, Joe Walsh were my "holy trinity + 2". And going back to the source of Muddy Waters, Buddy Guy, Albert Collins, the various Kings, etc. And Django was god. Not that I don't have an appreciation for other stuff (eg I like Vernon Reid, but couldn't listen to him all the time) |
You're right about Django. I really wish that more people were aware of what he was doing many years before anyone else, even more so amazing that he did it with only two fingers.
How do you feel about Allan Holdsworth? he's probably the best in my book |
