Is It Secure To Use Apple Remote Desktop?

I'm going to be living apart from the family for a few months. Since my wife is not very computer-savvy, I want a way to login to the home desktop iMac from my remote location.

So I enabled Apple Remote Desktop, configured a password, opened the needed port, installed Chicken of the VNC on the iBook, and am currently surfing PP on the Mac via VNC on the iBook. Okay, cool enough.

However, how much of a security risk am I running? Can others see my iMac, and break into it?
