Any "Full Metal Jacket" Fans out there?
Just got done watching the beginning of FMJ on HBO, a movie I've probably seen a dozen times, and it still holds up. One of my top ten movies of my list. One of the best lines: http://www.gyrene.com/chopper.ra

Either you're into Stanley Kubrik or you're not. I am.

Semi close to what it was like. Without the smells or the filth, or the music.

It's airing on HBO in 30 minutes, think I'll watch it again even though I have it on dvd at home. There's nothing better to do on graveyard shift.

"How can you shoot women and children?!?"...."It's easy - you just don't lead 'em as much..."
Or something like that... Love that movie. Mike

"Hey little school-girl. I'm a little school-boy too!"
The book was much more intense. Rafterman is run over by a tank. Joker isn't hard for killing the sniper. The sniper is never found. He kills Cowboy to stop the sniper from torturing him.

My college roommate and hockey teammate would get psyched up for games by watching the boot camp portion of the film. I am so sick of this movie despite not having seen it in ten years just bc of him, but it is a great film.
He was in the reserves at the time as well.

Not on my "top ten", but I'm a fan none the less! Maybe it's on my top ten for war/military films. I do enjoy Kubrick, and he's one of my favorite directors. Full Metal has that sort of strange eerie feel to it that seems to captivate me...

Having attended Marine boot camp myself I can say it is the most accurate portrayal of boot camp I have seen.
The drill instructors even used a lot of the same lines on us. It is sort of 2 movies in 1. I usually just watch the first half ![]()

Quote from a website: You can't get any more into Marine Boot Camp at Parris Island (without signing up) than you do in the first half of FULL METAL JACKET. R. Lee Ermey, who plays Senior Drill Instructor Gunnery Sgt. Hartman, was originally the Technical Advisor for the film. Since he had really been a Marine DI, Stanley Kubrick asked him to give an example of how an SDI would talk to a new platoon of recruits. After some minutes of non-stop invectives without repeating himself, Kubrick was so impressed that he hired Ermey on the spot to play the role on screen. And, the sample dialogue was incorporated into the script. |

The first half pretty much followed "The Short Timers". I found the book very disturbing.
The movie doesn't show Alice's obsession, or his necklace. Or the duffel bag. The description of Rafterman getting killed is also quite amazing. Geez, now I'm going to have to find the book and re-read it.
