Very interesting.

It's strange when taking into account that some individuals on the Pelican board actually own a higher number of personal automobiles than many of the billionaires on this list.

Thats true but I would imagine when you have a super yacht, helicopter, private jet and limo service, you really do not need a lot of cars.

Rank on Forbes.com 2005 World’s Billionaires List: 13
Net Worth: $18 billion
Vehicles Owned: 2006 Ford F-150 King Ranch
Source: Texas Department of Transportation

A rough-and-tumble woman who isn’t afraid of rolling up her sleeves and breaking a nail, Alice Walton lives in Texas on her ranch. Her history with vehicles is bumpy. According to the Springdale, Ark. police department, on April 4, 1989, Alice Walton struck a 50-year-old woman who walked into the path of her 1987 Porsche . No citations were issued to Walton, though the woman later died from her injuries. Also, about nine years later in Springdale, Walton was cited and later fined $925 for driving while intoxicated after she lost control of her 1997 Toyota 4-Runner and slammed it into a gas meter. Walton now has a 2006 Ford F-150 King Ranch, which provides her with an ideal blend of luxury and towing capacity.
Stay away from this one.

I think the first new car Jay Leno ever bought was the Carrera GT. His first Porsche too, although he is not a billionair by any stretch.

John Travola bought an airplane before his first car I think. Right after Welcome Back Kotter.

Jay Leno once told Jesse Ventura that he doesn't like Porsches because they "aren't mens' cars"... now how many does he own? 3 or 4 at least?

The Carrera GT was his first Porsche. He reportedly once said a car should sound like "ROAHHHHHHH" not "WHInnnn".

The only billionaire I know personally owns eight vintage Ferraris, a 550 Spyder and probably a bunch of other stuff I don't know about (be cause it's much less interesting). I believe his daily driver is an F-150 Ford.

I know a guy who, in the mid 90's, sold his company to IBM for $500 million dollars. He still drives his old volvo. But he has two nice homes - one in Pebble Beach and the other in Saratoga. He recently bought a nice big Mercedes-Benz but he only drives it on special occasions. When he first came up to our house in his Benz our dog, which was not familiar with the car, sniffed intensley around it then peed on the tires.

Some of the richest people I know/knew could care less about cars and chose accordingly. One gentleman, who has since left the building, was the founder/owner of the 3rd largest supplier of chocolate in the world. Granted, he was VERY conservative in every sense of the word, but not cheap. He drove an 81 Horizon until it fell apart. I guess he like his airplane better.

My wife and I were friends of an older couple when we lived in Fallbrook, CA. They were incredibly wealthy, but not billionaires... he drove a 5 year old Ford Ranger pickup and his wife drove a 5 year old Mercury Grand Marquis. He wore overalls and plaid cotton shirts and his wife wore plain cotton dresses. They were the nicest, most unassuming people you could ever meet and you would never know of their wealth, but you would know their friendship and graciousness!

Just goes to show, you don't become rich by driving the nicest car you can afford. Now if 95% of America would realize that, people might actually be able to retire some day. I do wonder though, how many of them have expensive "company cars" provided to them. Most business owners have very little in their name, I assume due to the tax benefits of the business owning everything.

Right, but since buying a CGT he's bought a couple more... a 996 or 997-based 911 and a vintage racer (i want to say either 917 or 956/962)... which is basically his way of admitting he was wrong before.
