Drove a Boxster for the first time tonight.
At 5000 rpm the valve timing changes, and the engine just makes this sound thats.......oh baby.....I feel dirty just listening to it. Pure porn.
So having driven there in my 82 SC, what is the most glaring difference when I get back in my 911? That gearbox. You don't really appreciate just how crude the 915 is until you directly compare it to a more modern one. I really need to find someone with a G50 so I can compare it. Its nice car. Very capable, suspension that was firm, but not harsh on choppy road. Engine loves to wind. oh yes....and it has cup holders.

So what did you think? I've got thoughts of getting an early Boxster S, one that has been out for a while and has some miles. Just have the itch for a convertable. Plus my 13 year old daughter really like them.

I agree with everybody's comments here. I never liked the Boxster, then I drove one...
The "S" felt as quick as my old 3.6 Carrera. Less raw but also easier to exploit. And the 6-speed transmission OMG. Incredible, like butter. Short and precise throws... Harddrive forget the G50... there was NO comparison. The Boxster transmission felt like it was from a different world... Well 20yrs have passed since the G50 introduction.. I guess the Porsche boys haven't rested on their asses... |

I've only sat in a boxster and messed with the controls, and I definately have to agree that the gear lever position, feel, and motion is better then any car I have been in.

S2000 has a great shifter too. Not as more torque - but seems to wind forever. -

Problem is you have to wind it up to 6,000 to get any power out of it.
Doesn't sound nearly as good as a flat-six either.

kach..can that yellow part, which appears to cover most of the engine, be simply removed to access the rest of the engine? or at least a better part of it? not familiar with the layout..

There are two covers over the Boxster engine. One is the carpeted portion, underneath that is the piece you see in the above picture. The difference is that the stock piece is just a solid piece of metal, no window, and not painted to match the car, because with the carpet on, you can't see it anyway.

So when is a car that has a high rev limit a bad thing. My 911 isn't fun at all if it isn't running a 5-6000 rpm. And with headers and a straight exhaust, it is anything but soothing. I drove an S2000 and was really amazed how much of a broad power band it had above 5000 rpm. Yeah, its noisy and can be annoying, but so are FI cars that redline at 17K. May I suggest a Camero if someone is looking for low end torque.

The F22C1 was developed, upping the displacement from 2 to 2.2 liters, reducing the redline to 8000rpm, peak power at 7500rpm, peak torque at 6500rpm. |
