The Mob, the FBI & the KKK.

This is not a Hollywood script.

HOW THUG MUSCLED KLAN IN '64

March 30, 2006 -- Investigators probing a tangled relationship between a top FBI investigator and Colombo powerhouse Gregory Scarpa Sr. have uncovered new evidence that the ruthless mobster was used to solve civil-rights murder mysteries in the 1960s, The Post has learned.
According to sources and records, Scarpa, a mob captain also working for the FBI, was allegedly enlisted by the FBI to go to the South and do the bureau's dirty work and threaten Ku Klux Klansmen into coughing up vital information - including the 1964 murders of three civil-rights workers in Mississippi.

Sources say probers from the office of Brooklyn DA Charles Hynes have located a one-time close associate of Scarpa who traveled with Scarpa on both secret missions.

In the fabled case involving the three missing protesters, Scarpa's handler brought him to Mississippi, gave him a gun and let him loose to terrorize a Ku Klux Klan member.

Scarpa jammed the weapon into the mouth of an appliance-store owner who was a Klan leader and said he would kill him if he did not disclose where the bodies were buried. The break led to the bodies' discovery in a sensational case that inspired the movie "Mississippi Burning."

Two years later, Scarpa was called up again - this time to return to Mississippi after the home of a black activist was burned to the ground. In his role of enforcer, Scarpa grabbed the Klansman suspect in the arson and pistol-whipped him until he confessed.

During Scarpa's reign, he always appeared to be protected from law enforcement.

From 1950 to 1985, he was arrested 10 times on charges ranging from carrying a gun to fencing hijacked liquor and playing a key role in the theft of $4 million in stocks and bonds.

Yet he served barely 30 days in jail until he was finally convicted of racketeering in 1994 - two years before the 5-foot-10 former wrestler died of AIDS he contracted during emergency surgery for a bleeding ulcer.

Why didn't the FBI just do the dirty work instead of protecting another criminal to do it? Back then I don't even think they would be sued like today.

Great story nonetheless!

When the US government asks for help from the Mafia, it's just one criminal gang asking for help from another.

The mobster probably had more resources at his disposal.
