				Mt. St. Helens pics

went up there today to check it out... Amazing, just amazing. Had a really cool old codger from the USGS give a long presentation on it. Apparently, the lava flow is going to fill up the crater in about 40 years. If you look closely, you can see the plume of steam coming off the top.. | ||

Rest in Peace...Harry Truman of Spirit Lake. Actually, I felt more sorry for his cats back in 1980.

I remember brushing the volcanic dust off of my car, here in Nova Scotia, a few days after the eruption. It is a small world in which we live. Les

I was there the week of the 20th anniv. It's amazing. The closer you get the more destruction you can still see and the new young trees that are coming in. It's a really beautiful place.

I was taking an igneous petrology class at UCSB by Cliff Hopson at the time of the eruption. He had just finished mapping Mt St. Helens, and was giving us updates during every class. When it erupted, he left the class to one of his grad students to finish the term, while he went up there to for research purposes. It was nice to get such detailed info on the whole thing as it happened.

Harry was 80+. He did not suffer the indignity of a prolonged hospitalization. He was lucid and independent till the end. No one had to bathe or feed him, he did not develop bedsores while hooked to a respirator. His final days were spent on his terms. We would all do well to live (and die) as grandly as Mr. Truman.

Moses, you must be reacting to things you have seen in your profession? But, yes...I think we all hope for a quick death. My dad lingered for years after a stroke. A blood clot after surgery...it was not a pleasant time for my dad, or the family.

I agree with Moses. He went out his way. There is something to be said for the dignity of it.

My Dad took me flying over St H's the day before the eruption. We flew back over it a week later and I'll never forget it. The valley could have been mistaken for a moonscape and the mountain itself looked like it was gouged out by the hand of god.

I friend has some out of town relatives here. Since there's not a cloud in the sky today, I may take them over the top in the Bonanza. If so, I'll post some pics later. | ||

I climbed what's left of Mount St. Helens in May of 1997. 8 hours up, 3 back down... Cheers, Paul.
