instantly know your fuel economy

For all of you guys that have OBD2 cars. I just found out about a tool while on the miata forum that will not only allow you to read and clear trouble codes, but will also provide real-time data about the engine.

It's called scangauge. Right now their website says they are sold out, but there are a slew of sites on the net advertising them. I'm betting one of them has some.

Here is a short article about the scangauge
http://www.metrompg.com/posts/new-scangauge.htm

Here's the company webpage
http://www.scangauge.com/

Here's an interesting but not related article about a guy that streamlines his vehicles for fuel economy reasons.
http://www.evworld.com/view.cfm?section=article&storyid=870

Here's what the scangauge can do
instant data

* Fuel Economy
* Fuel Rate
* Battery Voltage
* Coolant Temperature
* Intake Air Temperature
* Engine Speed (RPM)
* Vehicle speed (MPH)
* Manifold Pressure (not available on some vehicles)
* Engine Load
* Throttle Position
* Ignition Timing
* Open/Closed Loop

trip data

* Maximum Speed
* Average Speed
* Maximum Coolant Temperature
* Maximum RPM
* Driving Time
* Driving Distance
* Fuel Used
* Trip Fuel Economy

Pretty cool, when I have an extra $125 I may get one.

my pimped out Jetta keeps displaying it's fuel economy. It's fun to make it go to zero. Muhahahahaha!

Yea for $125 you can save two bucks a tank. . . If that. THAT makes a lot of sense. . .

Site sez they're sold out anyway.

Like I said, there are lots of things that you can do with it to include reading and resetting codes, getting other engine stats, etc...

Yowza, who peed in your coffee? I just put an interesting gadget out there that I thought some gadget/car guys might find interesting. I guess I'll take you off the list of guys that's getting one for X-mas.

Sorry man, no offense - I just kinda' hate the over-electronicization of EVERYTHING in daily life. Do I really need some digital box to tell me I'm going to get better MPG if I draft a semi-truck or stay off the gas pedal a little or keep the windows up or don't run the a/c as much? Cripes. I just think crap like this is exactly why people aren't capable of thinking critically anymore - they'd rather spend 200 bucks and have some (probably outsourced) software engineer do their thinking for them.

Just my $0.02. Thanks for sharing, but I think I'll stick to my knowledge of physics. Plus it's just one more doo-dad to distract people from actually watching the ROAD instead of their two DVD players, four CD-players, four-zone climate control panel with interactive monitoring, remote iPod tuner, satellite radio receiver, GPS navigation system, bluetooth-compatible mobile phone with center-console integration, etc. etc. etc.

I ain't quite as "anti-technology" as Ted Kazynski, but the more pervasive this crap gets, particularly in cars, the more I lean that way. Christ, when did people stop actually LIVING and substitute a made-up digital fantasyland for it? Must've missed the memo. . .

Did anyone check this article out?

This guy has a toyota pick up that gets 32mpg (vs the stock 25mpg) because he streamlined it.
