Nuclear proliferation is definitely a threat. But I worry about more conventional threats - like China, and who it will be buddy-buddy with in the not-so-distant future. In the next ten years, China expects to have an increase of 10,000,000 cars. They're going to need oil from somewhere.

Today, the Chinese were buttering up Kenya for their reserves.

Who will it be tomorrow? Iran? If so, what happens to the U.S. and its need for oil? Or U.S. allies?

I'm not a "fastpatstie;" however, in this case, I think he's nailed it. We were very happy to collude with Saddam when he waged war on Iran, and we (gov't, but not the media) ignored his use of chemical weapons against the Iranians. Anything to get back at the Iranians after the US Embassy takeover and hostage crisis.

We engage in a lot of name calling and saber-rattling against Iran. If you were in their shoes, what would you think/do? Anyone that thinks a military solution is in order at this time, better take their meds and relax. Diplomacy and economic pressure is the course to take. And start working on relationship building throughout the Middle East including the resolution to the Palistinean "issue."

No, the US government's policy of suporting Iraq against Iran had nothing whatsoever to do with the Cold War. In fact, quite the opposite. Most of the military equipment used by Iraq was furnished, and replaced by as it was lost, by the Soviet Union and China. And France, let's not forget France helping Iraq against the Iranians.

Empty rhetoric on their part, designed for home consumption. Israel, the country I'm sure you're referencing, is more than capable of self defense. In fact, they're much more aggressive in the region than is Iran.
