David Blaine "Drowned Alive"

Did anyone else see this last night? I was channel flipping (since my wife goes to Bible study on Monday nights I can't watch 24 until she gets home...grrr...) and came across this 2 hour show. 2 hours? To watch a guy in a big fish bowl?

To summarize for those who didn't see it, basically the guy put himself in a big glass sphere filled with water in New York for 7 days. Why someone would do this is beyond me. So anyhow after the 7 days he is supposed to hold his breath for 9 minutes and free himself from handcuffs to get out of the fishbowl.

So they have this big 2 hour special leading up to the big 9 minute breath hold. I was flipping back and forth and there was some cool street magic that they had tape of him doing at times, but most of it was them in Liberty square (I think that was the name) talking about this dude in the water. They had doctors there talking about how his skin was pickled and how he got food through tubes, etc, etc, etc...the whole time I am thinking "so what??"

What is so special about some guy deciding to take a bath for 7 days? It isn't amazing, it's stupid.

Then to top it all off he didn't make the 9 minute breath hold, he had to be pulled out of the water after 7 minutes. It was sorta like the Geraldo Rivera special about Al Capone's vault. Two hours of worthless leadup to a letdown outcome.

Honestly the flamingly gay guy on Deal or No Deal last night was much more entertaining...

Swim with them like pet fishies? Float them to the surface to be scooped out by assistants?

Sometimes they allow the person some time away from the stunt to eat or relieve themselves on a regular basis. Not sure what happened here....water looked pretty clear.

Two hours was way too long but I'll have to give it to the guy, seven minutes after being submerged for all that time is a feat even a SEAL would be proud of.

My thoughts exactly Rick, right down to the Al Capone's vault show. I can't imagine how he sold that as a TWO hour show to the network.

LOL, no not Howie Mandel. The contestant last night was wearing a hot pink shirt with his white pants and ran around the studio kissing every model on the cheek after she opened the case. In fact he almost fainted at one point and Howie had to sit him down on the steps for a few minutes. Either he was gay or had seen every stereotypical movie about gay men and was playing it to the hilt.

Either way it was pretty hilarious. Sorta like the Fab 5 meets a game show...

That was stupid = I kept on asking why? Should have let him die - at least score one for the gene pool.

Apparently learned how to do it with catheters - not particularly comfortable. Also lost a number of pounds in an attempt to require less oxygen. The record (per some article I perused) suggested the longest breath hold just under 9 min, hence his attempt to hold for 9 min.

Yeah the record was 8:58. Blaine went for 7:05. Now he did throw in the part about having to remove 8 handcuffs which the narrator kept saying was a huge amount of energy to expend while trying to hold your breath that long.

I still say it was stupid. I mean his last 3 shows were buried alive, frozen alive and now drowned alive.

How many more shows until he actually has to kill himself to get a sponsor?

I wish he would just go back to shows about his street magic, he is really amazing in those.

I had to switch the channel off of Deal or No Deal, that guy (pink shirt flamer) was giving me the creeps, he had his partner there as well. I wanted to hurl my dinner but instead I took the dog for a walk, much more enjoyable watching the dog take a dump. At least it's a natural act.

Can't stand the David guy but my wife loves the magician shows. Sometimes I think she would like to make me disappear.

I missed Sapranos and Big Love the night before. I watched the replay on HBO. I saw Blane was on and predicted it would be lame and moved on to my shows.

I wonder how many people actually watched the full two hours. A 20 second recap this morn in the news was enough for me.

I watched 3 1/2 minutes - took the 911 for a drive - when I got back watched 5 minutes at the end of the show. That was 8 minutes too long.

They should have made him do it without any backup plan, score one for Darwin! I saw a bit on the news about him, they treated his hands multiple times every day because the skin was getting so wrinkled. It was gross, a doctor said it feels like razor cuts all over. He only consumed liquids for a while before the stunt, so all he would need is a catheter. What a moron.

the first hour was # 4 in the ratings and the second hour came in at # 3, ahead of the apprentice.
I too caught a glimpse of the guy on deal or no deal, what a character. Gay or not... he had some set. I would have walked away with the 200k. I say good for him. What I would do for a few hundred grand, damn!

Yeah, the guy really had huevos to turn down the $240k and go for one more box.

Thing I don't like about that show is the entire thing is pure dumb luck...there is no skill or intelligence involved.
