Overheard on Police in car cameras

My friend sent me this e-mail he is a retired LEO.

The following 15 Police Comments were taken off of actual police car videos around the country.

#15. "Relax; the handcuffs are tight because they're new. They'll stretch out after you wear them awhile."

#14. "Take your hands off the car, and I'll make your birth certificate a worthless document."

#13. "If you run, you'll only go to jail tired."

#12. "Can you run faster than 1200 feet per second? In case you didn't know, that is the average speed of a 9mm bullet fired from my gun."

#11. "So you don't know how fast you were going. I guess that means I can write anything I want on the ticket, huh?"

#10. "Yes, sir, you can talk to the shift supervisor, but I don't think it will help. Oh, did I mention that I am the shift
supervisor?"

#9. "Warning? You want a warning? O.K., I'm warning you not to do that again or I'll give you another ticket."

#8. "The answer to this last question will determine whether you are drunk or not. Was Mickey Mouse a cat or a dog?"

#7. "Fair? You want me to be fair? Listen, fair is a place where you go to ride on rides, eat cotton candy, and step in monkey DOO."

#6. "Yeah, we have a quota. Two more tickets and my wife gets a toaster oven."

#5. "No, sir, we don't have quotas anymore. We used to have quotas, but now we're allowed to write as many tickets as we want."

#4. "Just how big were those two beers?"

#3. "In God we trust, all others we run through CPIC/NCIC.."

#2. "I'm glad to hear the Chief of Police is a good personal friend of yours. At least you know someone who can post your bail."

And.................... THE BEST ONE!

Those are all pretty tame compared to some I would come up with if I were a cop. I'm too much of a smart-ass, and dealing with the folks they do all day, I would get fed up. My wife tells me it's a good thing they hide me away in a cubicle and I don't have to deal with the public.

That said, I'm not a cop. This kind of smart-ass rhetoric has no place coming from their mouths. It's kind of one-sided, after all, coming from them. They expect you to just smile and take it, saying "yes sir/ma'm". If one of them wanted to go tit-for-tat on the smart-ass comments, I bet I could keep up. I also bet I would "lose" big-time if I ever tried.

Exactly.

I've had cops make comments like this to me, and I've always been treated like a criminal until I could prove otherwise (and even if I did, sometimes they still didn't care). I've never responded, but I have friends who have. One had to spend the night in jail for a speeding ticket and get his cars out of impound the next day (and that's a FUN experience!). Another got his bumper height and every other conceivable thing on his car measured and went home with a half-dozen tickets on a factory stock car.

I've always feared that complaining to a supervisor would just make one a target...

Yeah, we had a recent one here, that made the news. Some woman bumped the car in front of her, at a stop light. SHe wasn't really responding to the cop, telling her to get out of the car (like she was sloppy drunk). .. so he taZzZzZzed her for it. . .before dragging her sorry ass out of the car.

Oh, the funny part; turns out she was having medical issues (no alcohol) HA ha ha . . .in't that funny? . .it's so funny when cops are mean.

I did have a state trooper tell me that the conversation we were having was determining whether or not I was going to jail. I believed him. I wasn't drunk, but I did do a pretty cool power slide coming through a turn.

What was that? Super Troopers? I watched that in an airport once, borrowed it from my son. Kind of funny, plenty stupid.

I've never had cops treat me any way but extremely politely. The worst I've ever had was the last time I was pulled over. He wasn't really rude, he just didn't say more than about 5 words the whole time. When they ask me questions my answers are generally "yes, sir," "no, sir," and "thank you, sir."

When I was 14 riding my motorcycle on the roads running from the cops. I dumped my bike in the woods and was hiding in next to it. The rookie cop found me and came up to me and said "you move and you will have the biggest hole in your head you ever had." He handcuffed me and threw me in jail. I didn't do so good on final exams the next day.

Considering the a-holes and idiots a cop has to deal with on an average day, I think the comments are pretty tame. Sure it pisses me off when I get a ticket, but that's the risk I take by breaking the law. I always treat them with respect, and find that it's nearly always reciprocated. Considering the fact that these guys are killed for the sake of our protection and security, I believe they deserve to be cut a little slack. I guarantee you, I wouldn't last long in that line of work, after dealing with a few pricks I would start arresting people for jaywalking. People in general suck, especially the ones that the police visit. Ever watch COPS? Not exactly the cream of humanity's crop.

I look at dealing with cops the way I deal with servers in a restaurant. They have to deal with so many a$sholes every day for bum pay and I want to be the guy who either makes their day easier or at least not be the one who pisses them off. I've been pulled over twice in the last three weeks, both times while carrying a gun. Both times the cops were totally cool about it and the first time the cop didn't ask to see my permit or drivers license. When I got a DUI many yrs. ago, I was very nice and cooperative with the cops and it paid off huge. Not only did they not tow my car (told me to go get it the next day), they even drove me home when they were done with me. When I got to court, the DA offered me the sweetest sweetheart deal one could ever get.....because the cops had written in their report that I was very polite and cooperative with them. If a cop wants to give you a ticket, there's not much you can do other than show up in court. But sometimes you can make the cop like you and you can certainly not make it any worse than it has to be. I am not a shy or self-effacing guy and I don't take $hit from no one. But I keep the 'tude down when dealing with cops. In fact, when I go to court to fight my latest ticket (loud exhaust), I will specifically ask the cop in front of the judge if he would agree that I was polite and cooperative.

While I fully appreciate what you are saying Matt, I also think that people who break the laws (like speeding) that everyone (including cops themselves) break shouldn't be treated like murderers and shoplifters.

As someone who works as a corrections officer, and is considering a career in Law Enforcement, I just have to say that I got a chuckle out of it. Who hasn't received an e-mail poking fun at the job and things you wish you could say and do that wouldn't be appropriate.
Every time I have had contact with LEOs either because I was pulled over, at the scene of an accident, was robbed or in my quest to decide if it is the right job for me they have never treated me with anything other than strict professionalism.
IMHO it isn't a matter of having a holier than thou attitude, it's about tactics and training. I'm paid to be an ******* for 12 hours per shift as it is already. That doesn't mean I'm really an *******, it just means that I am playing a character to achieve my job as a corrections officer.
When an officer in a car is traveling faster than traffic while on duty do you really think that it is simply because he/she can? It comes back to tactics. I don't travel any faster than surrounding traffic, and I have never, not one, been stopped or ticketed for speeding. If you choose to break the law, the officer isn't under any obligation at all to cut you any slack. If he/she chooses too, they may, but that is their discretion to determine if the goal of law enforcement has been carried out with just a warning.
I'm not saying there aren't jerks on power trips wearing uniforms, I'm just saying that in my experience that must be an exception, because I have never met one.
