Who knows about the Gulf region?

Who knows about this part of the world? Habitat for Humanity has offered me a few different places to spend a week working on their post-Katrina build projects. Here are the locations available:

Slidel, LA
Pike County, MS
Meridian, MS
Mobile, AL
and Bay St. Louis, MS

Not that there is much time for sight-seeing and dining out, but where would you guys go?

I'm sure your talents could be used @ any of those places you mentioned. My in-laws lived in Slidell (house was flooded in Katrina)...Father-in-law died in Feb., we moved Mother-in-law about 250 miles north. In Slidell you are right on the "north shore"...you could run into New Orleans right over the I-10 twin spans that have been re-opened. What exactly are you wanting to know about the areas?

Slidell could use the help for sure, (i grew up there, so my heart is there) but of all those places overall, Bay St. Louis got it the worst.

Roux roux, where ya at?

I would go to MS, since everyone talks like Katrina hit ONLY New Orleans.

No, the Mississippi coast took the brunt of the hit (Gulfport, Biloxi, Waveland)...It is just total devestation. But on the north shore of lake p. (around the Eden Isles area from the marina inland) was just as bad. here are a few pics I took when we went down to move the Mother-in-law out)..

Rattlsnak, I hear you with a truly N.O. phrase there....I'd have to reply: "Crossin' da neutral ground to make groceries!"

Close to the shore was total devestation, and in downtown Slidell there was 9' of water. There are area that are virtually untouched, and many things are open again. Just thought you might want to look around there. Meridian is in the northern central part of the state on I-20. Although if you like Peavey amps you might want to visit there to see the factory.

I just don't know a thing..I have not been down there since I was a teenager.
Looked over some maps and web-sites and put in for Bayou La Batre, AL.

I may be a bit biased as well since I live in Bay Saint Louis, but my town needs a tremendous amount of help to get back together. It is a great little town also. If you come to work there, shoot me a private message and I can show you around and let you know what you can do for fun on your off-time. The news has not covered many areas of the mississippi coast, and the gratitude for volunteer workers is imense. Thank you for helping out.

Wthin 30 days of the storm I was in both BSL and Slidel . BSL did get hit worse for sure, but Slidel was a mess as well. The difference between the foundation swept clean and a few studs still standing is no difference.

My brother-in-law lives on the coast of MS. They got hit really hard and the area is not getting the attention or money that Louisiana and New Orleans in particular are getting.
