Pelican brothers, help me settle a "discussion" about tipping
Tipping for take-out food. Not McDonalds but regular restaurants that offer take-out. Places that package up the food real nice and even include plastic ware without you having to ask. Do you tip or not?
Wife says no because tipping is for table service only. I say yes because they take the time to prep it for transport. What say you? |

Only if there's a tip jar, and she's cute.

It would likely be appreciated very much by the cashier or whomever.
A few bucks would go a long way, I'd expect. KT

tips get split between wait staff, cooks and busboys. Cooks made your food, right? If it is a restuarant that I go to for sit down and I get take out, I tip about 10%.

Ok I work at Subway, and I usualy get a 1-2 tips a week. Trust me, if you tip them just a little that sure does make the job more accomplishing. though there is the exception when a pimp comes in and you only make 14 dllars worth of food and he tips you 6 dollars. I loved that guy!

I have never tipped for carry out. I'm a generous tipper otherwise, 20%+.

If there's a jar within reach, usually I'll throw in a buck or two plus whatever change I get back. I've never tipped at subway or any fast-food joint though. I bet if those places started putting tip jars out, they'd get something, though.

Back in the day (of being married and a low mortgage with two good incomes) I used to get take out from Bistro 45 in Pasadena. This is a Zaggat-rated, "best-of" by Wine Connesieur magazine, blah blah. Bottom line is the food is (was) sublime. When we wanted a decent dinner but didn't have a babysitter (like always) I'd get seared ahi and/or kona crusted beef and/or lambchops and/or...anywho, you get the picture. Food was perfectly prepared and well packed. Usually around $50-60 for two. I'd *always* tip when I picked it up. Like I said, the waiters aren't the only ones that get the tips and the food doesn't make itself...

MR. WHITE
Uh-uh. I don't tip. NICE GUY EDDIE Whaddaya mean you don't tip? MR. WHITE I don't believe in it. NICE GUY EDDIE You don't believe in tipping? MR. PINK (laughing) I love this kid, he's a madman, this guy. MR. BLONDE Do you have any idea what these ladies make? They make *****. MR. WHITE Don't give me that. She don't make enough money, she can quit. NICE GUY EDDIE I don't even know a Jew who'd have the balls to say that. So let's get this straight. You never ever tip? MR. WHITE I don't tip because society says I gotta. I tip when somebody deserves a tip. When somebody really puts forth an effort, they deserve a little something extra. But this tipping automatically, that *****'s for the birds. As far as I'm concerned, they're just doin their job.

I don't usually tip for takeout, unless I'm a regular at the place, in which case I'll sometimes add 10%, but only if I'm feeling in a "all's right with the world" mood.
No real rationale, just being practical. Having observed that if you don't tip a waitress you get lousy service next time, but if you don't tip when picking up takeout there seems to be no effect the next time.

I tip almost all the time but not at fast food joints. Any restaurant with a carry out or delivery, I usually tip a few bucks. If you go often enough, the servers, waiters, cooks begin to know you and recognize you and make you feel taken care of. I worked in a restaurant through my high school years and my first few years in college and appreciated all the extra tips I would get as they went toward a textbook or tuition to put me through college so every dollar makes a difference and if I can give back to someone else and help someone else with a few dollars, I am going to.

A tip is a gratuity for good service. You should not tip someone for merely living and breathing. It is slightly ridiculous that the food industry is able to subsidise their payroll costs in this fashion because of the widespread expecation that people will leave a 15% tip no matter what. Why not just add 15% to menu prices and be done with this mendacity? What other industry explots our gullibility to this degree?

I always tip. I may vary the tip, but I always tip. If I go to Chili's and eat for $12 they'll probably get $3-4. THey waited on me for an hour. I wouldn't do that work for $1.80. When I go to my favorite Sushi bar and the bill is $100, they'll get somewhere between $20 and $25 (the service is always good) If the service is moderate I still tip OK trying to give them the benefit of a doubt. If the service sucks then they'll generally get something like 10%. For carry out, I'll generally tip $1-2. (like at a Chinese place or something) No tip at fast food places, because they do get paid. They often make $6.50-8/hr.
