Pedophelia, Star Trek, Priests

I was reading an article a few weeks ago on Yahoo News (too lazy to look it up) written about detectives that work on pedophile cases. An interesting statement in the article was that they have found that a large number of pedophiles are Star Trek fans. So much so that the term "Trekkie" is code for "pedophile" around the station.

A detective theorized in the article that this was because many of the original episodes featured situations where Captain Kirk was tempted by a beautiful woman, but because of the situation, he could not give in to his impulses. The pedophiles feel they are in the same situation--fighting against their urges.

That got me thinking...what if other pedophiles are attracted to other institutions they see as helping to fight their "urges"? Say the Catholic priesthood? Some people believe the vow of celibacy drives priests to pedophelia, I've been thinking more and more lately that this actually tends to recruit pedophiles.

Becoming a priest is a LOT of work. I don't know what that *urge* is like, but for some I guess they surpress it. Others are human and succumb.

Not at all a slam. The way I see it, the fact is that lately some (I presume a small number compared to the overall priesthood) priests have been exposed as pedophiles. I don't buy the argument that this is the Catholic Church's fault, though I do agree that they could have done more once they knew of this behavior.

I know that becoming a priest is a lot of work. I'm guessing that any pedophile who enters the priesthood is very serious about suppressing the "urge". Unfortunately, despite their best efforts, men do occasionally fail.

Further, it really irks me when this problem is used bash the church--or even held up as proof that all Christianity is evil.

Probably true. I would suggest that a large number of people who enter the priesthood do want suppress urges that create guilt. It is a great reason to become a monk or a hermit, because then you are not presented with the temptation. Unfortunately, by nature, those that choose to run, are most likely to fail when actually presented with an opportunity to do so.
