Met the In-Laws half way to Iowa - Kids to spend a week on the farm while Mommy and Daddy play…

In Kansas, There is no shortage of pro-life bill boards. My 7yr old is perfecting his reading chops and bill boards provide a good skill builder. He saw a few on abortion and was able to sound it out. The following is our conversation:

Dad, whats abor-tion?

Why do you ask?

It was ona buncha bill boards, what is it?

(I looked at my Wife and her at me, I have always been honest with my Kids and I’m not gonna stop…)
It is when a baby dies before it is born.

Why does it die Daddy? Was it sick?

Sometimes it is so sick and other times it is the best for the Mommy.

How does it die?

The Doctor has to take its life.

(At this point the car falls silent. He just looked out the window. I could tell he was thinking about it and was having a tough time figuring it out.)

Its alive when he kills it?

Well, ya, it is alive but some folks are not sure it is “life” until it is born.

But how would ya know if you don’t let it be born? Docta’s are spose to help ya, how can they kill a bady? Doctas are stupid, I don’t like Doctas…

Well, not all Doctors do this just certain ones.

Why would anyone want to kill a little bady? I don’t understand Dad…

Well, in Texas some bad people get put to death but that s only if they have done something really bad.

You tell me not to kill anything unless it’s a black widow spider or sump’tin I gonna cook an eat an kill’n anything else is wrong Dad, you said it Dad, you said it was wrong so why do those people do it?

(Now being able to talk my way through just about any issue is a born talent. I can get you pissed or calm you down with a few sentences. I know how to lube the rails of controversy and grease the wheels of progress. This one had me.)

I don’t expect you to understand yet just like I don’t think you understand all the stuff that Daddy talks about in his courses he teaches or the things I write about, but someday you’ll understand.

He sat silent for sometime. I didn’t look over at my Wife because I knew I would have gotten her patented ‘look’. I kept driving. I saw another billboard that promoted life. I looked in the rear view mirror and saw my Daughter coloring and my Son now playing his GameBoy. I thought about them and about the babies never born. I felt a lump in my throat and my eyes got wet…

I think your 7-year old is on to something, babies shouldn't get aborted. It just seems... wrong.

Now on the other hand, some of the other drivers I've been encountering on the road recently provide a very powerful argument for the legalization of retroactive abortion.

Your answer may have been delicate (which I can appreciate), but far from honest....Mothers have abortion because they are irresponsible, it is convenient, she is a slut, or she has been encouraged to by some scumbag...It is not right, it is murder, it destroys the life of the unborn, the life of the mother and the life of the doctor that performs it.

edit: rarely do woman have abortions because the baby is sick.

Do you know what rape is? Do you know what Downs syndrome is? Do you know what amendment rights are? Do you know what personal choice is?

No one says abortion is correct. But no one says God, the bible, Christianity and how it is interpreted thousands of years later are correct, either.

My Wife has a friend who had one - her child developed without a brain of sorts - there is a medical term for it but it excapes me now. She elected to have an abortion and even then it wasn't easy for them.

Nor should it be easy. It's a horrible conclusion. But one has to deductively question not just their own quality of life if that child is born, but the quality of life of the child if it survives after birth.

Anacephalic. I guess in a case like that, an abortion is (I can't believe I'm going to say this) a no-brainer.

Do you know that a very small minority of abortions are rape cases? Do you think the child of a rape or Down's syndrome cannot bring joy to a parent? How would you feel if people started killing children because they discoverd a gene for homosexuality, and wanted to murder it for that reason? Do you value life?

Do I know what amendment rights are?...There is no Constitutional right to murder a human without a fair trial.

Do I know what personal choice is?...Do you know what personal responsibility is?

It's safe to say that the majority of abortions performed each year are because the mother would "rather not have a baby".

plenty of examples of children coming from the worst environs to become something special and also examples of great parents raising devils.

Abortion is simply, well, MURDER! In all cases.

In the case of the mother being in jepordy, for her life, its still murder, but excusable, by reasons of self defense, and that is rare.

Bingo...This is an honest answer to an honest question.

retrospect, maybe. I can think quick on my feet but this one came outa left field...

To a 7yr old the amount of info I gave alone is subject for debate. Explaining the social dynamics of abortion at this age is tougher than rebuilding a flat six with 3 fingers.

Doesn't matter what statistics you come up with. It's a right. It is protected, and those rights are guaranteed to women for the circumstance a woman may find herself in, whether unfortunate or (as you claim) always fortunate.

Besides which, in your vast knowledge, can a person really trust that you have some idea of what ruins a woman's life when you like to tell women "go make me a sandwich."?

It is not a right. The people were not allowed to vote on it. The people have been lied to and brainwashed about it for years. At least 50% of America disagrees with you. The only reason it is protected is because of judicial activism and fiat that violated the Constitution...The woman, "Jane Roe", was not only used as a tool by the lesbian NOW and other feminist groups, but she is currently anti-abortion.

Abortion is murder. The psychological damage to women costs the taxpayers billions, nevermind that the big-business of infanticide has done nothing to solve the problem it promised to.

"The right" as you call it, to abortion, was the spawn of a racist eugenicist, Margaret Sanger; to this day the NOW has an annual award bearing her name.

My only point, other than agreeing with your son, is that your answer was far from honest.

Tough subject...Your son was troubled and sad as should anyone with a conscience.

The annual number of abortions performed is both staggering and disgusting.
