NASCAR tries to quash open-wheel racing in Phoenix!
Check this out:
http://www.champcarworldseries.com/News/Article.asp?ID=10406 Who the hell put NASCAR in charge of public policy in Arizona? If there are any Pelicanites in Phoenix, then please show your support for getting some REAL racing out there! Basically here's the deal: Champ Car is looking to start running races on the streets of Phoenix starting in November, 2007. PIR (Phoenix International Raceway) officials are opposing the idea, saying it might jepoardize the possibility of getting a second NASCAR event added seasonally to PIR. To their own (selfish) ends, legislation was recently introduced in the AZ legislature that would have made ANY race event on a temporary circuit illegal in the state. Fortunately, this measure was defeated - however the battle to bring Champ Car racing to Phoenix is far from over. . . As you might expect (being from Long Beach and all), I'm a pretty big Champ Car fan. I look forward to the events every year and I can say without a doubt it's a HUGE windfall for the local economy. What do you guys think?

owner of PIR is scared it will take bucks away from him. when formula cars were run here, it was a unreal shot to local economy. attended all of them and had a riot! bernie ecclestone prez of F1 kinda jacked city hall around and the mood soured at the time. hope they can pull it off. nothing better than racing thru the streets. you couldve gotten rich selling ear plugs as the F1 cars were tearing up downtown!

Please respond to this poll where currently 56% of the readers of the Business Journal of Phoenix who've voted say "No" to this race.

NASCAR pulled this same crap on ALMS in Miami a few years ago because of the proximity of Homestead.

kinda surprised by thought process of people on this subject. man that is a lot of cash into local economy! hotels, rental cars, food service, parking fees, beer(mein gott im himmel)! just to name a few! lots of cash to be made on this venture. any kind of grand prix/indy cars thru city streets is too cool to watch. love the long beach venue! when i lived there we wouldnt miss it for the world. mega fun!

Jeff,
I did as well but eventually if enough people complain, they may have to post the comments. Joe A

You don't mess with the Three Amigos. Those guys are smart and relentless. Just ask F-Tony George. I predict that ChampCar will prevail!

Well, maybe Phoenix needs a Danica vs. Tony Stewart vote.
BTW: NASCAR squashes anything in its path. They have to now that their ratings are about 20 percent below last year's. About ten or so years ago, the European Touring Car Series wanted to come to the U.S. - which would be like stock cars, except Japanese and Euro cars which also cornered. NASCAR shot that idea dead in about a heatbeat.
