Anyone have an Insomnia cure?

First time in my life. Just can't sleep. No worries or anything, just awake. I'm downing some Metaxa right now for pass-out results if nothing else, but I need to find a better way. tia

No cure. Been this way my entire life.

Just read any of the longer political threads from around here, works like a charm. You'll be sawing logs in no time flat.

C-span's small frequency variation works for me.

Hard work. I go out and work in the yard until I am bushed.

Have a nice dinner and am asleep .5 nano-seconds after my head hits the pillow...

Liar. I've been to Phoenix. You don't have yards.;)

I've been remodeling a bathroom in my home which included installing a cast iron tub. Trust me-I've been worn out at the end of the day.

The Metaxa actually worked.

Sex??

Think of nothing, let thoughts wander to uselessness

See your doc. There are some great medications available. Particularly if it's only for occasional use.

I went through a two-month period where I just couldn't sleep recently. There are a few things to consider...

- if you are worried about something, it will keep you up.
- if you are actively trying to sleep, it will make sleep harder. that's why you will sometimes be dozing off while watching tv or reading, but then when you turn the light off you can't seem to fall asleep. Getting frustrated makes it worse. Whatever you do, don't look at the clock.
- If you don't fall asleep after laying in bed after a half hour or so, get up and do something to occupy your mind. Go to bed when sleepiness comes on.
- Eliminate caffeinated drinks after 2PM or so. THe caffeine stays in your system for hours.
- Get more active. Wear your body out. That's what it's there for.
- Sex definitely helps. Not only does it give you that "post-coital bliss" feeling, but sex releases the body's natural sedatives.

I have kept all these things in mind, and my sleep has been much improved except for a random night here and there. Actually, my problem lately has been waking up in the middle of the night... not sure what to do about that one.

Trouble falling asleep or staying asleep? Melatonin has been effective for me staying asleep. Diet supplement, OTC.

Ambien and valium didn't even make me drowsy on my flight back from Hong Kong. I've never had insomnia per se, but I am a very light sleeper and have trouble getting back to sleep after I've woken up in the middle of the night. I've found I sleep best and longest when in total darkness. Last week I bought some navy blue curtains to go over my blinds. I dim my clock radio and even cover the display with a handkerchief, I put a shirt over the power LED on my stereo and then it's just about totally black. All I can see when my eyes adjust are the tritium sights on my night table .45. I sleep soooo much better now. Those curtains were the best money I've spent in a long time.

Its right next to the pool, about 50 square feet worth. Can mow it in 3 minutes. All the grass anyone needs in Arizona!

Balvinie helped me last night... :)

Rick Lee 06-23-2006 06:24 AM

Gawd, I want to move to Phoenix!!! Joe, 12yr or 15yr old Balvenie? I can get 15 yr. old in NJ for $51.00!!!!! It's $68 in VA.

TerryH 06-23-2006 06:51 AM

No trouble initially falling asleep, but will wake at any noise, then toss and turn for hours. Last couple of months I've been using ear plugs and have slept much better. Hopefully, my wife will wake me if the smoke alarm goes off. ;)

Rick Lee 06-23-2006 06:54 AM

Ear plugs work well for me too. But after my smoke detector incident two weeks ago, I'm not about to try earplugs in my house. I use them in airplanes only.

LOL!

"but will wake at any noise, then toss and turn for hours."

Same here... can't sleep with anything stuck in my ears so I got one of those noise makers you put next to you bed. You can select, white noise, ocean waves, waterfall, etc. you can get them cheap off evilbay. Helps me go to sleep too.

Booze works but don't like the morning after affect.

The doublewood 15 year old. I get it in the duty free in London when going/coming to work and its a lot cheaper.

Last trip picked up something called "Monkey Shoulder" scotch and its wonderful. Price is very good but it not imported anywhere out of the UK YET... If you ever find it, try a snort...
