Project Management courses?
Good morning everyone....
I want to get some formal training and certification in project management, preferably relating to Information Technology. This would suppliment what I do "on the job" Have any of you taken any of the many online or self-study courses? Are they worth it, or would I be better off taking a class thru the local Community College? Thanks!! -Brad

bb,
See if Fort Carson has any affiliated courses with national or regional universities or colleges. I flew out of Carson quite a bit in the mid 90's when I needed to keep my Blackhawk quals current...most military bases the size of Carson attract continuing education programs that anyone in the community can take advantage of. My Dad lives in Monument...I plan on seeing him the first week in August. Good luck!

I took online and read some of the more popular training materials in advance of takign my test. Check out pmi.org, they'll usually have some info on training that's offered by local chapters for PMP or CAPM. In order to get either of those certs, you'll need some formal training anyway.
The PMP test has proven extremely difficult for a lot of folks since they revised it last year. BUT, it's all in how you prepare and test - my wife used my old study material and passed the new test on her first try. Are you doing full time PM work or is it fallign under that category of "someones gotta do it or it'll never get done..." That can make a difference in your approach. PM me if you like, we can talk further.

I think AMA (American Management Association) offers some good project management courses.
http://www.amanet.org/seminars/category.cfm?cat=209&org=Sem I recommend AMA's courses in general.... Our project managers (IT) are in the process of getting their certifications....I'll inquire on Wednesday as to what courses they took..... |

CC, I was just about to recommend checking out AMA. Sometimes their courses can be a little superficial so check out the synopsis real well, but in general they're widely accepted.

Thank you all for your replies! I did a bit of digging and it looks like I am short of the "required" amount of time doing PM.
I just thought this would be something nice to have on the ol' resume. Seahawk, where in Monument is your dad? You should stop by for a beer....or three ![]()
