How do you say "ironic" in Polish?
Nazi regalia rush sets Poles apart from Germans
Allan Hall, Berlin July 11, 2006 BERLIN is pressuring neighbouring Poland to shut down factories producing replica uniforms, weapons, flags and symbols of the Third Reich that are bought by neo-Nazis in Germany. The legal workshops across Poland — there are four round the city of Poznan alone — fuel a huge demand for Nazi regalia worldwide. But in Germany all symbols of the National Socialist regime that ruled the country for 12 years, culminating in World War II and the Holocaust, are banned. Factories exist on industrial estates in Warsaw, Krakow and many other medium-sized cities and towns, all linked to the internet and high-speed courier services shipping the symbols of a wicked, defeated tyranny to eager customers spellbound by the symbols of a political movement whose appeal refuses to die. Bans don't stop the stuff manufactured by people such as Andrzej Frankowski from pouring across the border from one Eurpoean Union country to another. His factory near Poznan makes swastika flags, swastika-bearing steel helmets, SS runes and the most popular item of all — copies of the standard-issue shirt worn by Wehrmacht soldiers in World War II. "They love it," Mr Frankowski said. "They can't get enough of it and I am making good money as a result. "It is a question of supply and demand — they demand, I supply." There is a certain irony not lost on people like Mr Frankowski that Poland — the catalyst for World War II following the invasion in 1939 that turned the country into a mass grave where 3 million Poles died and the Nazis built their extermination camps — is now the centre of a thriving post-Nazi industry. But talks are under way between German and Polish diplomats to shut down the factories, many of which sell to collectors in the US, itself the biggest source of neo-Nazi literature and propaganda in the world.
