Does your family eat "Organic"
My wife could me a nutritionist. When she was competing in body building she really had a nack for getting the diet right and adjusting on the fly listening to her body. (Which btw told her she was ruining it and she stopped competing)
She helps me a lot with diet as well and when I listen to her diets are easy and I cannot belive how much I can eat and STILL loose weight. To my point. She has read a lot of books on nitrition and the FDA and the process farming food and animals. She is convinced the family (kids especially) needs to eat as much organic as possible. We will waiver off here and there but for the most part we eat as much organic as possible. I wonder if this will have a noticable difference in our kids development wise. I have already noticed a huge difference between my 13 y/o son and his younger cousins (11 y/o) who seem more developed (puberty) then my son. They eat a lot of fast food on a regular basis. We never eat it and, again our food at home is organic. But ultimatly, I wonder how they will fare in the long run, we expect our sons to be healthier in the long run but who knows. Are we crazy? Does anyone else do this?

We eat partly organic. I would like to learn more about the pros and cons (if you have any links, I'd certainly read them), for now we are only partial, and it really depends on convenience. My wife's motivation is health, mine is also social/economic (supporting the small farmers who have converted to organic).

Jim;
I could just about do a stand-up routine about my first visit to an all-Organic grocery store (not that long ago). I was sent in to get three things. Eggs, bagels, and creamcheese. Took me 15 minutes to stop laughing at the girl who was explaining about the egg choices. Eggs from chickens that had never been lied to, eggs from free range chickes, eggs from chickens that were stress-free, eggs in colors, eggs that had not been 'snatched' from the nest. Unwashed, uncandled, unfertilized. The bagel pile was just as funny. Bagels that had been dropped in a freshly paved lot. Bagels from goose down whey. Bagels from unleavened germ-free wheat. Bagels from electric-only ovens, bagels that were UDHT, GHTV, KLGT, HRPO, ABCD free, you name it. When I got to the creamcheese case, I lost it. The very first thing I saw was cream-free creamcheese. Then I saw cheese-free creamcheese. I have not been back.

I tried talking to my son about nutrition. He looked at me like I had lost my mind. He eats everything within reach without regard to what it is or where it came from. Fast food, organic food, macrobiotics, it's all the same to him. He's 6' 1" and seems to be growing every day.
My wife and I prefer to eat meat once or twice a week, but that won't work for our son. The boy craves meat. And vegetables, and pasta and cereal and fruit and pizza...

Don't buy organic, buy flavor and appearance. Enjoying food it about sight, smell and taste.
Sometimes organic has the best flavor, in which case I buy it. Sometimes organic means that the pests ate 50% of it before it even got to the market, because the farmer couldn't kill them with free love and citrus spray. Then he forgot to wash the mud and crap off the produce. Screw that. If there's a food mantra to live by, it's not "buy organic" it's "buy local." |

We don't eat "organic", but we are careful and get our beef/pork from a private enterprise, so we know hwere the meat comes from and that no hormones/chemicals are used.
I recently had some serious gastrointestinal problems and gave up all artificial sweetner and the problems are gone! Pretty interesting...

We eat partially organic. My daughter gets all organic milk. Were not nazis about it. I'll take her to McDonalds on occasion.
You don't need to make any effort to eat organic in Seattle. I have a lunch spot in my building called Organics To Go. Great food. Many places serve organic produce, and don't make a big stink about it. Have you guys seen the new Organic cereals from Kelloggs? Organic Frosted Mini-Wheats!

a technicality..but i've been 'corrected' many times. think the proper term isn't 'organic', but 'organically-grown'. a tomato is 'organic' no matter how you buy it.

We try to eat organic. Problem is the term "organic" can be used by just about anyone, and there is no guarantee that what you are getting is actually organic (ie. naturally grown and pesticide free).
It comes down to finding a market or store that buys only from geniunely "organic" suppliers and then trusting the distribution chain. If I could buy shares in "organic" I would. As more and more horror stories surface linking pesticides and genetically engineered food with all manner of illness - the trend toward organic will only continue.

I refuse to eat in-organic. Rocks and metals just don't do it for me...I need carbon.

Will only have a significant impact on your wallet. And perhaps your local farmers wallets.

Hi Jim,
I don't think you are crazy. I try to eat organic as much as reasonably possibe. I do it for a couple reasons. One is health. Mine and the planets. The other is to help small Co. grow. I like small Co.s better than big ones. I have been to Walfart 2 times in my life and will never go again. I have been to a fast food place maybe 5 times in the last 20 years. I have heard about the growth hormones affecting kids and it sure does look that way when I drive by the local high school. Or maybe it's that I am a middle aged dirty old man. Yea that must be it.

Using "organic" farming techniques (i.e. "natural" fertilizer, no pesticides, etc) how many people can be supported by a single acre of land?
Using advances fertilizers, pesticides, and advanced techniques, how many people can be supported by a single acre of land? Can we support 6 billion people using "organic" farming techniques. Can you make all the ethanol you want using "organic" techniques. Can you actually tell an "organic" fruit from a standard one? Will I ever stop asking questions? Will I ever answer one, or are they all rheteorical?

Considering we're paying farmers not to plant, I don't think maximum yield is important in the US.
If we were having this discussion in some parts of Africa, then to me the question would be economic - can the farmers afford the advanced fertilizers, pesticides, etc? If yes, then go for it.

Just saw a news report about farmers in NorCal fearful of losing their 'organic' label because the public health authorities are trying to stop a mosquito outbreak and the spread of diseases locally by spraying from the air. An agreement was struck to not spray the 'organic' farms.
This a case of 'organic' being bad for everyone.
