I was a bartender in a club with a kitchen here in Houston for almost 5 years so I can say things like queso, lechuga, ongos, ajo cebolla, etc.... One of these days I'm going to learn a bit more than that. Funny since I'm from FL and now transplanted to Houston, with all of the Cuban's, Puerto Ricans, and here in Texas just about every other kind of Hispanic, you'd think I'd have learned by now.

I'm currently studying Japanese. Not for anything other than that I want to.

Yes, I speak and write it, though not fluently. In L.A., it's almost a requirement that everyone speak a little Spanish.

You'd think that Houston would be that way too, but there are plenty of us who don't know enough to be useful.

I agree. What's interesting to me is in Los Angeles a person can really struggle in certain everyday circumstances if they don't speak at least conversational Spanish.

For example, I've found it's almost easier to speak Spanish when I go to places like Home Depot, the grocery store, and especially fast food places. The beauty of this is the more I speak it, the better I get with it until it becomes almost second nature.

I once heard that a person really knows a second language once they "dream" in that language.

True. At the same time, in a city like L.A., you can live your entire life only speaking one language (either English or Spanish), and be fairly OK. Our requisite/default 2nd language in school (growing up in L.A.) was Spanish, so whether we wanted to or not, we had it daily from Kindergarten/1st grade until we graduated high school. Oddly, it wasn't until I graduated from college (and lived in Boston or the Pacific Northwest) that I ever used it in daily/business transactions. But I guess if I ever move back to SoCal, I'll be comfortable using it daily.

I probably don't count (I was born in Spain), so yes, I can speak Spanish, some English too and about 6 other languages fluently (read, write, speak), plus basic knowledge (more beer, bathroom, etc.) in another 8 or so
