The Passion of the Booze
Mel's busted.
http://www.cnn.com/2006/SHOWBIZ/Movies/07/28/gibson.dui/index.html How does a cop bust MEL GIBSON? I'd think the guy is a hero/role model for most cops for portraying Riggs in Lethal Weapon and puttin' the smackdown on all manner of bad folk. . .

Uh, so he doesn't cross over the yellow line and slam head-on into your wife's car with the two little kids in it as well?

I like the title, well done.
Too bad, ol Mel seemed like a decent guy, pretty rare in Hollywood. Been married a while with a family, seemed to actually have some morals......doh! Probably why this is such a story, if it were Johnny Depp caught with 10 lbs of coke it wouldn't even make the papers.

Man did this thing get ugly in a hurry. . .
Goes from "just another" guy driving home after having had one too many to a full-blown controversy. The initial report was that he wasn't all that drunk (drunk enough to perhaps have warranted a free ride home in a cop car or something) but now it turns out the guy was drunk enough to launch into a semi-violent diatribe about the Jews. Crazy. His career's over. Time for him to go to the South Pacific, buy an island and enjoy his untold millions from working so hard all these years. . .

It's obviously some kind of mind-control set-up by the Jews, to discredit him, after the Passion of the Christ and all.
I mean, you guys don't see this? C'mon. Jeez. JP

Mel's further apology:
There is no excuse, nor should there be any tolerance, for anyone who thinks or expresses any kind of anti-Semitic remark. I want to apologize specifically to everyone in the Jewish community for the vitriolic and harmful words that I said to a law enforcement officer the night I was arrested on a DUI charge. ... The tenets of what I profess to believe necessitate that I exercise charity and tolerance as a way of life. Every human being is God's child, and if I wish to honor my God I have to honor his children. But please know from my heart that I am not an anti-Semite. I am not a bigot. Hatred of any kind goes against my faith. I'm not just asking for forgiveness. I would like to take it one step further, and meet with leaders in the Jewish community, with whom I can have a one on one discussion to discern the appropriate path for healing. I have begun an ongoing program of recovery and what I am now realizing is that I cannot do it alone. I am in the process of understanding where those vicious words came from during that drunken display, and I am asking the Jewish community, whom I have personally offended, to help me on my journey through recovery. Again, I am reaching out to the Jewish community for its help. I know there will be many in that community who will want nothing to do with me, and that would be understandable. But I pray that that door is not forever closed. Judge for yourself, obviously, but I'm inclined to believe he's sincere. And I'm not a Mel Gibson fan to begin with. JP

If he's so vehemently anti-Jew*, he can just move to New York and replace to replace Kofi Annan as Secretary General of the UN.
JP *FWIW Arabs are "Semites" as well, as are Babylonians, Phoenicians and Ethiopians. So anti-Semite has got to be in the top 10 most misused slanders.

I didn't think there was that much stink over Charles Barkleys comments. If the public doesn't like him, they can choose to not see his movies. I haven't see "Passion" and don't really intend to. It was a pretty bigotted thing to say, but many are "opinionated towards other cultures/religeons/etc. and express it through their actions.
There was a report by Wolf Blitzer to the effect of "Mel Gibson is now reaching out to the jewish community in an attempt to save his carrer". Are they his primary audience, or did that refer to the production side? Hmm.

Hundreds of other actors could have done the same thing and made the same comments, and it wouldn't have been nearly the issue. It's really what Mel has stood for in the past that makes him a mighty big target, especially in ultra-liberal Hollywood and the media. What he did was dumb as hell, but now thanks to the media it's taken on a life of it's own.

Well, there's two ways to look at whether or not Mel's career is over:
First, I think he made "Passion of the Christ" independently - in fact, how else would he since the whole thing was in Latin. Anyway, Mel made something like $300,000,000 from it. So I think his career, or his assets, are fine. However, just hours ago ABC cancelled the miniseries he produced which was to appear next week.

Your kidding right? It always amazes me how fact and fiction become blurred. The real hero in this case is the police officer that took the "lethal weapon" off the road. What an actor does in a movie certainly does not make him a hero, Heroes are ordinary people selflessly helping others. Steve

The last apology seems completely sincere to me. I'm absolutely sure that Mel Gibson cares more about his relationship with God than his career. I guess his alcoholism and latent bigotry have slapped him in the face. It may be that he feels the need to "get right" with his God.
Tough to crawl out from under the shadow of a strong-willed rascist father.

His career over? I think not, not even close. As stated above, thanks to that flick, he now has more money than G-d(as the observant Jews like to write it. Why is it that he gets drunk, makes some stupid comments and gets hammered. Rappers write "songs" about killing cops and they get famous, crazy world.
Nobody gets mad at Barkley because he is who he is. My wife met him once when managing a sports bar in Houston. She let them sit in a closed area of the place, then told him she shut it down so he and his party would not be bothered. She got to talking to him and he is a genuinly good guy. When he found out about this kid my wife was caring for who was dying of cancer, he went out to his car, got his jersey, signed it and gave it to her.
