Cisco switch/router help

I have a cisco catalyst 4006. I am logged in but no clue how to set ports and vlans.

all ports are inactive...

so i need to activate all ports then recreate the Vlan as all ports.

Oh...the reason for this is we lost power and the router is not on a UPS.......

I'm only a beginer when it comes to cisco switching but...
Were you able to get into the enable mode?

My instructions are for My work's 2900-3550 access layer switches, but I belive it's the same for the 4000 series as well. Also these are bare intructions on adding vlans to particular ports

config term (should bring you into the configuration mode)
int fasteth 0/1 (or whichever port you're working on)
no shutdown (for activating the port)
switchport access vlan xxx (specifiying the vlan)
(repeat previous three statements for all ports)
end
write

I'm still pretty new to IOS so I can't say they will definitly work but it should give you a start to adding vlans and activing ports. YMMV, no guarentees, etc, etc

I think there's a way to do that, but I don't know it. What I do in that case, is copy the correct lines into notepad, duplicate them til you have the correct number of ports and then change each line so that it reflects to correct port. Then past the whole thing back into the terminal.

I do not know why loosing power on a 4000 series would erase the memory

neither do i, however its one of those Neglected systems that no one wants to foot the bill for, yet, people whine when it goes down.

Personally, it lets me work in the cool lab and avoid having to to sit in cube city.

If your 4006 lost it's config then you need to open a case with the TAC. There's definitely something wrong. On the 4006 you are running the pre-IOS style code, aren't you? Or have they moved those to the IOS command line as well? I haven't worked with one in quite a while. We have 29xx/35xx and 6500s.

When a switch boots up with no config then every port is automatically on vlan 1. It's Cisco's version of plug and play, you can take a switch out of the box and it'll switch packets. So if your ports aren't doing that then there's something else to look into.

I'm sure you've got it configured by now, just giving you some stuff to think about.
