Angry 1999 Durango 5.9L Shutting off, Help PLEASE

PROBLEM Any help is appreciated, I have searched multiple forums, but this is my problem, While driving normal down the road the vehicle will just shut off. After waiting for a few minutes to cool down it will start back up as if nothing happened.

MAINTENACE PERFORMED It does not have any issues with the oil sump screen or low oil pressure, and I have changed to the upgraded plenum gasket(the old one was toast), tranny speed sensors are both good, and have performed preventive maintenance regularly. The motors runs smooth at 109 mph for hours on end on the Autobahns of Germany(until this started). The check engine light is not on! My Durango has been to the Dealer(Chrysler dealer due to being stationed in Germany) 3 times for the same problem. They have changed the battery??, cleaned the throttle body, and changed the O2 sensor so far.

I have read on other posts about this issue but no body followed up with posting thier solution, so if anyone has a clue, please let me know. I am currently deployed to Iraq and can only help my wife by giving suggestions. She is gonna make me buy a new one if this one doesn't get it fixed!!! So help me out guys!

Thanks in advance,

Jason Baldwin

I just went through the EXACT same issue with my moms Ram. It was the fuel pump. friend of mine shop foreman of a dodge dealer, says it a real common problem. Its not hard to change, but u do have to drop the tank, and the pump is fairly expensive(200+ with my discount) good luck

Hope it works Jason, my parents had a late 90's Dodge Caravan with weird electrical problems. Randomly, all of the gauges and the radio would just go dead. Gauges included the speedo, not really a good deal. They had it in the shop more times than I could count, eventually sold it. Nobody could figure it out. Stay safe over there.

These problems are really not that hard to track down, -IF you find a tech who is willing to spend some time on it. They need to drive it until it happens, - not just on a 5 mile loop, like the majority will do-. When it shuts off you are losing something. Youe engine only needs four things to run. Mechanical has to be OK, air, spark, and fuel. You are losing one or more of the above when it stalls. You can tackle each issue one at a time. So when it happens, spray some carb cleaner or such into the throttle body, if it starts, you have a fuel problem. If not, then pull a plug wire off and check it for spark. Air is something you cant control unless the filter is clogged. Mechanical is last, being doubtful bcause it usually runs good. The only thing left there would be a clogged Cat convertor, which happens when it gets hot. Get them doing some investigating and post the results, and we can go on to the next step.

Also could be the pickup coil under the Distributor cap...every one replaces cap and rotors, no one looks under neath.

Friend had this problem, when heated, it would stop running. when cool, itd start again. If its the problem, its a cheap fix.

also you man want to pickup and install a fuel pressure gauge even if just temporary.

Yes those were common also. That falls into the 'no-spark- category.
