Oshkosh pics from last week

Oshkosh was fun, but it was kind of hot and rainy!

My Piper Pacer and a rainbow

Rows of Stearmans,Beech Staggerwings and Howards

I hate you, not fair. My grandfather invited me to go up with him in his Bonanza, but I couldn't away from my finals. Damn you summer school!

Matt, your priorities are really messed up!

Hell, I used to blow off college classes just to watch Miami Vice re-runs and to finish a good game of darts or ping pong!

My employer knows that I would quit my job of 15 yrs vs missing my yearly pilgrimage to Oshkosh!

Mass arrival of Cessnas who flew in as a group. During mass arrivals, they land on two runways (36 left and 36 right) with multiple airplanes touching down staggered out on the same runways at the same time. It is fun to watch.

Believe it or not, there is a 18/36 runway (owned by relatives) crossing my runway 27/09, but I rarely use it as I typically take off on 09 from my hangar and land on 27 so as not to have to back taxi unless the winds are ferocious. The 150hp Pacer with only me on board, typically uses less than half of the 2500' available. BTW, I HATE MOWING.

Was afraid that you might have crapped your panties if you were subjected to the sometimes frantic Oshkosh arrival procedures.

If I am ever up that way again, I am going to use every trick in the book to try and humiliate/guilt you into going for an airplane ride!

Great shots, Tim. Someday I'm going to make it to Oshkosh.

Here's my P-51 "Frenesi" that I built from plans. The wings are balsa sheeted foam that I that I hot-wire cut. The airfoil is an Eppler 203 (terrific for this size and type of model). This plane flat-out boogies.

Tim, that kind of attitude is what got me kicked out of college the first time. Skipping tests for concerts and parties, not good.

Robert, what was the official line on the Honda jet pictured? All I have read is that Honda isn't planning on entering vlj market, but I find it hard to believe they spent millions developing their own jet and powerplant for a pure technical exersize.

Also, did anyone see anything out of the rumored "Cirrus killer" that Cessna is producing? All I could get out of a engineer buddy there is that the wing is "lower", composites are involved, and it looks cool as hell. He said they were shooting for an Oshkosh unveiling.

Honda announced a few key things at Oshkosh...

(1) The HondaJet be a production aircraft!
(2) Honda will create a non-equity partership with Piper (details to be announced in October) and Honda will manufacture the HondaJet in the USA, while Piper will be responsible for marketing, sales, and service.

More details here: http://world.honda.com/HondaJet/

My dad canceled their Eclipse a while back when they announced that there would be dealys while they switched engines. He is already looking to getin line for that Honda Jet. That thing is slick and may be the only one that eqaul to or better than the Mustang. I saw it and the Adam at Sun 'n Fun. The Adam is cool looking but the Mustang is just so cool. unfortunately, it'sprice indicates that Cessna is pretty proud of their airplane...lol. Didthey have the F22 at Oshkosh? The had 2 of them fly down from Langley to Lakeland for a demo on the last day of Sun N' Fun. I was OFFICIALLY impressed all to hell The guys who have flown agasinst them at Tyndall say they go upagainst 4 to 6 F15's, F16's and F18's and 9 times out of ten, they kill all of them before they other guys can even find the F22. I know some people ***** about the price and that it is a Cold War dinosaur, but the performance indicates that the F22 and F35 will be money well spent.

Yes, and just as they did at Sun-n-Fun, impressive as hell. I think the F-22 must have a vectored thrust device, 'cause it was doing some moves I've never seen a fixed wing aircraft do before, e.g. hover!

The Blue Angels also did a couple of fly-bys, but what really impressed me was the Air Force's C-17 when it took off and did a couple of hot laps around the field. Incredible. It rolled over at least 75 degrees after departing, then rolled back 180 degrees and held it before getting lined up on the runway blasting down the flightline. On another pass, it came down dirty (flaps and gear) and seemed to be nearly standing still.

There was also a B-1(b?), a pair of F-15s and a pair of A-10s that did some crowd-pleasing moves.

Yes, the F22 has thrust vectoring on the vertical plane only. I read somewhere that the reason they didn't use the full 360 vectoring like the XF29 and the advanced Sukhois was that the performance gains were minimal compared to the added complexity of the system. Did the F22 do the semi-hovering thing while it was waiting for the show to start? That was cool. The C-17 is an amazing...and amazingly expensive aircraft. The biggest problem that it has is that super advanced wing design creates such wild vortices that you can't follow in real tight formation for drops like you can in a C-130 or 141. The trade off is that you get a better handling and better proportioned package with a much more usable cargo bay, higher lift capability and MUCH better short/rough field performance than with a C-141, which was somewhat of a mutt from the get go. The C-17 strikes me as more of a big bad high tech cousin to the C-130 rather than a relative of the 141 or C-5 as far a versatility goes.

The C-17 IS an expensive aircraft, so much so that the US government is contracting with Russian companies that fly the massive Antonov transports for US military airlift missions around the world rather than use the C-17. See Wikipedia and Antonov.
