wow now thats a story! glad to hear you and your g/friend are allright. had similar incident occur with a javelina while i was hauling on a bultaco trials 250. hit the damn pig dead on despite trying to swerve. no helmet- flip flops =lots of scabs. OUCH!

Bikes are for teens. My 50 year old dad took my mother for a ride on a friends Harley. He hadn't rode a bike for over 25 years. They found a loose manhole cover, broke them up a bit, but they both lived. Having patched up the damage from road debre to several of my cars, I can say riding a bike is simply suicidal.

An acquantance of mine rides 0-90 in 3 second bikes up Palomar mountain, road racing. He gets the biggest sht assed grin on his face when he tells how he layed it down and skidded for 1000 meters. Bikers are just plain NUTS.

Many years ago, a friend of mine was hit by a car during a photo shoot - a freak thing. As well, his then girlfriend was with him during the shoot - they've since married. Anyway, the "ex" (I quote ex because they were never married), banned my friend from seeing their child after he was hit. To this day, I think her response strange (if not illegal), and based in purely in emotion more than logical thinking that an accident is an accident. To be frank, this flashed through my mind when I first read of your accident. "Ex" anythings can act inappropriately possessive, I've found, when accidents occur that are beyond their control.

The ex was pretty cool about it. She was actually happy because she's been anti-bike from the get-go, and has consistently said "no bikes" to Calvin. I agreed to back that message after the accident, so she gets what she wants. And that's fine by me. But she's been sympathetic too. She went through her own health issues awhile back and I was supportive (that was not too long after I moved out), so you just do what you gotta do and keep going.

Mostly I'm just tired and sore. My friend who is head of plastics at USC is going to make a house call tomorrow to take a look and tell me what the next steps will be, so that's cool. Good to have smart MD friends...

This works both ways...don't beat yourself up. It "could've" been alot worse. For one you're lucky the animal didn't tangle up in you front wheel. Imagine that wheel locking up.....

Glad you're OK. This scenerio is what scares me on my bike. I live in country somewhat and blasting down empty roads with woods on both sides freaks me out. A deer or rabbit or whatever could easily get in my path before I could react. Scary stuff.

How was the explosion of the bike though? Cool I hope

Glad you came out alright considering the situation. Hope that both of you have a speedy recovery with minimal lasting effects.

I would suggest that you consider getting back on a bike in the future though. I know everyone here seems to take this as a sign that you should not be riding but I don't see it that way. It was not your or your bikes fault and there is no telling that even if you were in a car it would not have been this bad or worse. There are more than enough stories of little car crashes that have turned deadly to show this. Yes a motorcycle is inherently more dangerous but an accident in a car is still not exactly safe.

The only bad wreck I have taken in 8yrs was on my dirtbike at the motocross track. I still have memory loss from the concussion. The only thing to do IMO is get back on. I know that I have to confront the thing that threw me in order to get on with life. Even if you don't own a bike or pursue it with a passion at least think about riding again. I would let you use one of mine, if you ever feel like getting out to CO.

Todd glad to hear you are ok. Yes motorcycles are inherently dangerous. So are lots of things that are fun to do. Tobster does a good job of writing exactly what I am thinking. I've had two bad wrecks. One at the drag strip and one when a car ran a red light and hit me as I was making a left hand turn. Both times my equipment kept me from serious injuries other than bruises head to toe and some broken fingers. Both times I couldn't wait to get back to riding. No I don't have a death wish. I just enjoy riding.

Just want to echo the sentiments above...once it cools off some I'll probably start riding again. Especially when I finish my latest project.

My mother used to work with a guy who was killed when a deer jumped a divider, sailed through the open cabin of his convertible and landed right on top of him.

Damn Todd, glad you too are going to be ok. I worry about dumbalopes (stupid little antelope things we have here) running out all the time as well.

From reading your story, it sounds like you are lucky nothing happened to your shoulders / arms if you held on to the bike while you were skidding. My buddy laid down his Duc Monster, and since he hung on it dislocated both his shoulders. He is adament that if he would have let go, things would have been much better for him.

You hate to say it, but stories like this are why I put on the Sidi's, pants and armored jacked evertime I get on the interstate.
