Head-on with a drunk illegal

So last night my wife and stepson are with me returning home from visiting my mother in law at a local care facility. As I take the offramp from the freeway onto our exit I see what appears to be two sets of very bright back-up lights near the top of the offramp, maybe 200 yards away. I figured maybe someone stalled and the guy behind was backing up to get around. Then I realize that I'm seeing headlights, and a car is accelerating THE WRONG WAY down the offramp to get on the freeway. I've always wondered how the hell somebody can get so badly turned around to get on the freeway the wrong way.

I hit the brakes and stop my car to give the other guy as much room as possible to realize his error and stop too. Except he doesn't stop. And he doesn't swerve. He just keeps on accelerating until he plows perfectly centerline to centerline with us.

His airbags deploy, his windshield breaks, steam hissing. Then I realize he's trying like crazy to back up! My son jumps out, grabs the guy out of the car and walks him to the edge of the offramp and sits him down. He's got a passenger with him who's got a bleeding eye and a fat lip.

Two drunk illegals. Apparently they turned left onto the offramp and clipped a car going the other direction, spinning her car onto the offramp facing the wrong direction (that was the other pair of headlights I was seeing). So in order to avoid deportation and other unpleasantness, they drove away from that accident and ran straight in to me.

Let me tell you - Lexus builds one hell of a solid car! Whatever POS he was driving is toast. My airbags didn't go off, nobody in my car was hurt. My car doesn't even have a wrinkled hood. Except for some surface scratches, all the damage appears to be below the midline of the front bumper. I think what happened is that his car was a bit nose-down - he must have hit the brakes at the last moment - that caused him to hit my car low. Since I was stopped with my foot on the brakes, my car was level and I didn't meet his bumper at the same height. There is some cross-member stuff that supports a radiator that is pushed back, and the car sounds like a high rpm fan is hitting something. I'll know more whenever I get an adjuster assigned and get a call from them.

I guess the bright side is that I stopped them before they had built up a full head of steam and killed someone farther down on the freeway.

The downside is I just found out that I don't have rental car coverage included in my insurance. What a pisser! Sure wish I had already found and bought my 911 by now.

hmmmm.... if their bodies were never found, who'd know? Who'd care?

"Dunno, officer. They just took off.... that way." "Nope, nothing's in my trunk; that's just the stereo..."

I imagine their organs would bring enough on the black market to buy a nice 911.

What difference does it make? It could have been two white uninsured hicks doing the same. What are you going to do at that point - sue America?

It's good that none of you were hurt though.

Geezuz that sucks. Glad you guys are all okay. I swear I'd have beaten the living ***** out of 'em right then and there ("they were injured in the accident, officer"). You showed great restraint and seem to be handling things well.

Every time I read one of these stories I have to admit I sorta' rethink getting that "uninsured motorist" coverage but I just can't justify the cost. The thought of forking over more of my hard-earned money to insurance companies nauseates me worse than the thought of being in a wreck like yours. Oh, I'll get paid either way. . . whether in dollars or ass kicked, I'll get paid without it.

Seriously glad you guys are okay though. Please share your experience with your congressional representatives (in my area it's Dana Rohrabacher, who I'm happy to say is leading the charge for stricter laws against illegal immigration).

My sig. says it all.

When are we going to get tired of this stuff enough to stand up and stop taking it?
The state is too crowded. The freeways are too crowded. The crime rates in areas that used to be safe are skyrocketting.
they can't interview anyone on the news anymore without an interpretter.
The hospital trama centers and emergency rooms are going belly up left and right because they can't afford to treat the undocumented and un-insured. 1 out of 4 in mexifornia is uninsured which doesn't surprize me because at least 1 in 10 is illegal. Yet they still keep coming and the politicians keep the welcome sign on.
The mayor of LA (who is hispanic) marches alongside the hundreds of thousands of illegals in protests against illegal immigration reform.
It's only going to get worse but the good news is we don't have very far to go to hit bottom.

Glad you're OK.

I never could understand how this could happen until I watched a guy turn left out of a gas station on a one way feeder road and then turn right into the U-turn lane. It was too fast for me to do anything. I guess his next move was to drive up the feeder road and enter the exit ramp.

Big difference, since mexico encourages its people to sneak into the USA. The 2 white hicks are here legally. Down in FL. we just feed them to the Gators, problem solved until the next batch sneak in. Sammyg2 gets, and so do many others here who are tired of our tax $$$ being used to reward an illegal activity.

Wow! Just got back from Enterprise Rent a POS and look at all the replies!

Nobody's gone to the doctor yet, but my wife will be making an appt today to see ours. I'm fine, Jeremy's fine.

The passenger ended up walking off before the cops showed up, but I really didn't care enough to press the issue. We had the driver. He was most definitely arrested and hauled away. He ended up on a hard plastic Crown Vic backseat waiting for the officers to take everyone's statements. When the officer got back to the car the guy was so drunk that he almost would not wake up.

He was illegal, but get this: He had his own social security card. How the hell does that kind of thing happen? I mean, come on!

I take the uninsured motorist coverage because I think the odds are very high that the person who fuchs up my car will be uninsured. It's just part and parcel with living off the radar screen.

As to the ACLU causing me grief - bring it on. I don't think that's the image they want to portray, and if it is I'd love to really bring it out into the light of day.

It is not only "uninsured" you need but "underinsured" as well.

My Dad was almost killed and out of work for two year due to a drunk on a bike. The biker did have insurance - but the minimum liability - only about $10,000 at the time. Not worth going after.

Get them both - as the accident you are likely to get in is with those who have not enough insurance or none at all...

The CHP on the scene told me he was, but I don't know how he determined it. He was dumbfounded that the guy had a S.S. card.

Just after the accident the driver was pleading for us (via a bilingual witness) not to call the cops because he'd be deported. That if we didn't call he would pay for the damage.

I could be wrong, but that was enough to make me believe he's illegal.

Honestly, I don't know what I'm more pissed off about - the fact that I follow the rules so that sorry bastard can get a (more than) fair shake, or that he decided he should drive when he was so trashed. I think it's about 50/50.

Think there's any way to get the ACLU to help me go after the drunk? He's infringed upon my freedom to drive down the road I helped pay for with my tax dollars without running into a drunk illegal fleeing the scene of an accident.

That's an image I'd like to see portrayed.

Firsly, glad you and your family are fine.

Secondly, this is garbage:

Perhaps a more honest approach - for some - would be to start another " 'Merica hates Mexicans" thread.
