Just Had an Epiphany About Costs of Porsche Ownership

I was watching this show on Speed Channel about amatuer road-race bike guys (privateers)

There was a guy just starting out on his own and he asked a seasoned privateer.......... "How much do you think this will cost this year?"

The older guy answered: "***** that's an EASY question! I can tell you down to the penny what it will cost!"

Young guy says "Really?...........How much"

Older guy"........"Everything!"

Young guy........"???????"

Older guy....." Yeah.......every freakin bit of your disposable income!!"

Kind of says it all !!

LOL! I rationalize it like a trip to Las Vegas: you're not losing money, you're spending it on entertainment.

The usual answer is "How much you got? That's how much it will cost."

What's that old saying? "It's easy to make a small fortune in racing. Just start with a large one." Porsche ownership ain't necessarily racing, but the same rules apply.

On the other hand, I was once watching and interview of a privateer race team who was campaigning a GT3. They had a pathetic budget, so they would call ahead to local PCA chapters to get volunteers to work pits, etc. They asked him why he was campaigning a Porsche. He said there were two reasons:

1) Porsche makes an out-the-door race car. Except for suspension settings, this thing is ready to go. Fill it up with gas and oil, make adjustments, and go racing.

2) Then he looked straight into the camera and said "The other reason is because Porsches never, ever, break."

If any of you guys want to save some bucks and get a Ferrari instead, go for it.

At the '66 Tour de Corse:

Vic Elford: "That's great. Car looks great. But where are the spare parts?"

Huschke von Hanstein: "We don't have spare parts. Porsches don't break."

I was going to say the same thing about Ferraris. Even the "cheap ones like the early Mondials and 308's cost a kings ransom to maintain. How would you like knowing that you had to do major supension component replacement the minute you bought the car. That is par for the course on the 70's and early 80's V8 cars. You can buy a VERY nice late 70;s Turbo or 80's M492 Carrera for the same or less and do a top end rebuild and still be ahead of the game. But Porches are like any other pricey hobby, just not quite as severe unlessyou get crazy like some of us do....lol. Try flying on for size. Standard rebuild and prop overhaul on my dad's Cessna 421 C is getting up pretty close to $100k. That happens every 1800 hours, which for us is less than every three years. Only good news is that it gets expensed. Try big game fishing while you are at it.....lol.
