Eddie Van Halen eat your heart out

This guy is apparently a Korean teenager who taught himself guitar over the last 6 years...simply amazing!

The kid is good but he is no John Petrucci (the greatest guitarist ever).

Okay, I'm going upstairs and putting my guitar away.

It's guys like that who make me realize I have no business goofing off even with my headphones on.

When that guy inspires an entire generation of kids to go out and buy guitars, then I'll say he's got something on EVH. Eddie's main instrument is piano. He just plays guitar for a living..... and he's still that good.

Dude, he looks to be 15 or something. I'm sure he isn't quite emotionally mature enough yet to exude any "feeling".

This kid has amazing potential.

John is a machine... technical, precise, but totally lacking in style. I mean, the guy plays arpeggios and scale runs like an animal, but he has no musicallity. And you're right, he may be the greatest technical guitar player ever but he could stand to spend a bit of his practice time finding his voice instead of perfecting his technique. Honestly, his music bores me to tears.

To me a great guitarist is someone you recognize right away when you hear them. Listen to any Stevie Ray, EVH, Brian May, Hendrix, Eric Johnson, Yngwie and you know right away, without a doubt who it is. I'm tempted to learn that Cannon Rock tune note for note and post a video of myself playing it here. I have zero doubt that I could do it in a few weeks. But it would not even put me in the same universe as the guys I mentioned above.

Here's an obscure, but one of my favorite, EVH clips. This was about a year before their first album with Sammy came out and I'm sure Ed is bombed out of his mind here. But check out his playing. You can't mistake it for anyone else. Solo starts at about 2:10. Still gives me goosebumps.

Maybe. I've seen young players with less technical ability but more "feel" than this guy. No doubt he is very good, talented, and has spent untold hours woodshedding. But imho listening to the wrong stuff. He might mature into a good musician, but usually chopmeisters stay chopmeisters.

Like I said, ymmv, but these shreadasaureses all sound alike to me, in part because they all listen to the same stuff and cop the same things. It isn't that tough to crank the distortion and play a zillion notes a minute. It takes practice and dedication, but with only that you can do it. To play 3 or 4 notes over a couple of measures and make it mean something...that is a totally different thing.
