Huge Shunt at Elkhart

This doesn't look good all. Katherine Legge's wing flap just came off just before the kink at 160-170. Car disintegrated. It's on Speed TV now. 5 laps to go.

edit: Apparently she's alert - this thing looked fatal for sure. A miracle.

She just walked out of the trailer to wave to the cameras - this is the most amazing thing I've seen in a LONG time.

Terrible crash, she's lucky to be unhurt.

Man, my heart was in my throat and my hands were over my eyes watching that today. Just like Krosnoff's shunt, you have a sickening feeling in your stomach. But, it seems like the cars have improved immensely in the past 10 years. Glad to see that she is in good shape after that.

That was one amazing shunt ... truely remarkable that she survived, let alone walked out of the medical center.

From the helicopter shot I was surprised to see how little run-off was in that turn.

Some of the corners are pretty tight at Road America. I know I was pretty scared as a passenger there a few weeks ago.

I hate to admit that brought back fears of Fontana several years ago. I had just been talking up Legge to my wife. My wife and son were sitting here when I saw the crash and I don't think they understood my reaction. I was almost in tears. I'm soooo glad she's OK. I hope this doesn't affect her driving because I think she's the one to take woman's driving to a win and a championship.

Anybody catch her comments that horseback riding is more dangerous?

I tend to agree.

Yowza, that looks ugly. I've seen a tail fall off of a car at the end of a straight when the car was still going straight. It immediately went into a spin.

That was a most disturbing sight. Great to see her come out of that med unit with a big smile. And her comments about horse racing reminded me of the loss of Superman.

Did anyone hear WHY that wing broke off? Given the loss of stability etc it makes me wonder how a bewinged 911 would react in the same situation! Any thoughts.

The kink is the scariest part of Road America imo. In my car I'm aiming at that wall at about 100 mph. The idea is to ignore the wall and focus on where you really want to be-anywhere but the concrete wall!! It really takes everything I have to not lift in that corner. It's really scary! It's the only turn at RA that doesn't have a runout. She's very lucky to be okay.

She seemed pretty darned composed in her post-crash interview. Stiff upper lip and all that.

Man - that's sickening. And to see her smile and waive. Yowza. There are a bunch of engineers high-fiving each other right now. Nice job guys.

If any car was going that fast, it wouldn't take much to upset the stability and lose control. If I remember correctly, it was "just" a broken rear sway bar that led to the crash that killed the great Jimmy Clark at Hockenheim.

Wow. She didn't even break anything? Concussion? How could a body deaccelerate at that rate and come out unharmed? Even with every available safety enhancement?
